Good, reliable card with Linux support
operating system:LinuxIn my opinion, this is a good, reliable wireless card. I ordered this card at the end of May 2006 and I received a card with H/W Ver.: E1, F/W Ver.: 5.00 within a few days (thank you Ebuyer!).
I bought it mainly to use on my old laptop running Linux (Slackware 10.2) which also dual boots to Win 98 SE. I chose this card because Linux drivers were available. Please note that earlier revisions of this card used the madwifi drivers under Linux. However, H/W Ver.: E1 uses the RT61 driver available from: http://www.ralinktech.com/supp-1.htm
The RT61 drivers have to be compiled (after extracting the tar.gz, follow the instructions in “RT61_Linux_STA_Drv1.X.X.X/Module/readme”) but despite the module compiling cleanly under a 2.4 kernel, I could not get the card to be recognised as a wireless adaptor (ra0). However, after upgrading the kernel to 2.6 from Slackware's testing directory (you could of course compile your own 2.6 kernel), I had no problems getting the card to work. You might find the walk through instructions for Ubuntu (running 2.6) useful, regardless of what distribution you actually use: http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=132980
Once set up, the card seems to perform very well under Linux. While I have no experience of how this card runs under other Windows version, it does state that it is compatible with Windows XP, 2000, Me and 98 SE. From first hand experience, the card and bundled software does run well in Win 98 SE. However, Win 98 SE itself does have poor DHCP compatibility making it difficult to connect to some services.
I hope this information is useful to anyone considering buying this card. I would really recommend this card!
Another Excellent D-Link Product.
operating system:Windows XPHaving recently bought a DI-524 Router, and a DWL-G510 PCI adapter for my desktop i thought id also get the matching PCMCIA card for my laptop, being the DWL-G630. As with the other two the G630 is an excellent card with excellent performance. The supplied software works very well and loads very quickly. The adapter supports all the encryption methods, WEP, WPA and WPA2 with or without the radius server, and it gets an excellent signal all over my house. What else can i say, can it be beat for this kind of money? I dont think so! Cheers
