fantastic piece of kit.
operating system:Not ApplicableThis one is the slightly older model, but this is important if you want to upgrade the firmware to the open source version. The non-linux versions have less memory that do not allow installation of the OSS firmware.
Why would you want to do that?
Well you can more than quadruple the power output on the thing and finally get wireless all over your house.
Out of the box, it has a Xmit rating of 28mw.
Install the DD-WRT firmware,
http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/index.php
And you can bump it up to a recommended 80mw - 100mw.
You can get it up to over 200mw but then you'd have to buy a new router. Either that or you'll end up being microwaved.
Works perfectly with OpenWRT
operating system:LinuxThe sole reason I bought this router was to install OpenWRT on it. I did this on day 1, so I really can't comment on stability/performance of the standard firmware. I can say though, that (at least the hardware of) this router is great. Buy in confidence :-)
Superb - both in original form and reflashed
operating system:Not ApplicableI now own 4 of these... they are amazingly versatile pieces of equipment.
When used as supplied with their original firmware they have a superb web interface with just about every option under the sun (including the ability to block a childs access to the internet certain hours of the day).
When reflashed with one of the many open source firmwares available they can be transformed into just about anything - I use mine to monitor and record outside temperatures and light levels, control outdoor lights and irrigation systems and to control the heating / air conditioning in the house (all connected to the WRT54GL via a simple bit of home built electronics).
If you want a general purpose router - I give it 5 stars.
If you want a cheap low-power platform to develop your own programs and base your electronic projects around - I give it 5 stars.
All round a brilliant product, and a bargain at the price.
Fantastic Router - Best Version of the WRT54Gx Family
operating system:Not ApplicableI've been using this router for many months now and I have to say that it is an excellent router. However, by installing the dd-wrt firmware (see http://www.dd-wrt.com) it has been made an even better piece of kit.
Not only is it unbelievably reliable (it has only been rebooted once since I've had it, and that was because I changed from WPA to WEP for my Nintendo DS) but it has so many features that you'd normally only find on much more expensive hardware.
The WRT54GL is easily the best version of the entire WRT54Gx range of routers, as this version has ample amounts of flash memory, so that you can flash the firmware with the full version of DD-WRT. The non-Linux versions of this router have all had the amount of memory reduced by Linksys over the past few years, in an attempt to thwart the installation of 3rd party firmwares.
Don't miss out on this one - if you're thinking of getting a wireless router, this is the one to get.
