Speed Rating Class 4 What does that mean?
I have a campaign about vague details on websites and especially product specifications where a detail has no relevance or any reference point one can easily understand.
With that said my focus this time is the constant reference to Speed Rating on SD cards, this is shown as 'Class 4' one may as well say 'Vague 4' because Class 4 means nothing unless there is an explanation with it.
Wikipedia have this explanation for Class ratings
SD Cards and SDHC Cards have Speed Class Ratings defined by the SD Association. The SD Speed Class Ratings specify the following minimum write speeds based on "the best fragmented state where no memory unit is occupied
Class 2: 2 MByte/s - 13x
Class 4: 4 MByte/s - 26x
Class 6: 6 MByte/s - 40x
SD and SDHC cards will often also advertise a maximum speed (such as 133x or 150x) in addition to this minimum Speed Class Rating. Important differences between the Speed Class and the traditional "X" speed ratings are;
The ability of the host device to query the SD card for the speed class and determine the best location to store data that meets the performance required.
Class speed defines the minimum transfer speed. Even though the class ratings are defined by a governing body, like "X" speed ratings, class speed ratings are quoted by the manufacturers but unverified by any independent evaluation process.
So there you have it, if you read the above text you see that there is a contradiction and this is typical of such information. Speed Class 4 means under perfect conditions you can transfer 4MBytes per second, but you might actually be able to transfer more because the manufacturers defines it as a 'Minimum' transfer speed... Confused!
Welcome to the world of technology, where clarity about products specs are still vague. Kingston actually quote on their website that:
High-Speed Class Rating:
Class 4: 4 MB/sec minimum data transfer rate.
So For kingston at least, one can take it that class 4 means 4MBytes per second can be obtained as a minimum speed but one could get faster speeds.
