Now works with Linux
operating system:LinuxBought this keyboard for a media PC as it has the right features at the right price.
Unfortunately the previous comments were right, the main keys were not having any effect in Linux. I have since addressed this, see: http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14787
Bottom line- this keyboard will work with Linux if you run the latest kernel at the time of writing.
Cheap and sensible.
operating system:Windows 7This was on sale recently and is a great bit of kit. It's light, thin, and plastic, but doesn't feel particularly flimsy, and isn't bulked out with extraneous plastic curves. The keyboard is not something you'd want to author a thesis on, but is comparable to your average cheap laptop so quite good enough for most TV-range computing. The actual layout of buttons is sensible enough, without stupid media keys hovering under the spacebar waiting to get knocked by accident or overriding your function keys--they stay out of trouble on the side. The range is fine, although I've not tested it up to the advertised maximum. It takes standard AA batteries, so you don't have to worry about an integrated one losing its ability to hold charge. There's a physical switch on the bottom to keep it turned off, and the USB dongle is about the size of a non-fat flash drive and docks into a hollow on the underside of the keyboard. It does have a red LED which flashes when receiving, and apparently when the keyboard has gone into powersaving sleep, so you may want to hide that down the back of your machine to avoid distraction. The slight ridges marking out the numeric keypad on the trackpad can be felt, but otherwise it's a nice big pad and as practical as a laptop's trackpad to use as a pointing device.
Software-wise, plugging it into Windows 7 automatically found the drivers from Windows Update, and everything works this way apart from the multitouch trickery on the trackpad, like zooming, which would probably required the supplied CD. It looks like there's one non-generic driver for the trackpad, which might be for the multi-finger middle/right-clicking (works without CD) and possibly its numeric keypad mode (very useful for certain games at a distance). The actual keyboard part appears to be a generic USB keyboard, so chances are good (but untested!) it'll work with other operating systems.
This is not just a good wireless media centre keyboard/trackpad for the price, it's a good wireless media centre keyboard/trackpad full stop.
A very good product for use with my laptop/LCD TV.
operating system:Windows XPI was a little concerned when ordering this product as several reviews had commented on its cheap plastic construction. Whilst it's not built like a tank, I would say that it's more than acceptable for the purpose for which it's primarily designed, i.e. for use with a Media Centre style installation. I can now sit on the sofa and surf the net on the 32" TV without the laptop warming up my legs! So it's not my main PC and I would always type letters etc. on that instead. But, the touchpad works a treat and feels just like the one on my Acer Laptop and I do like the pressure/feel of the keyboard keys. The only problem I've had is getting the Internet shortcut keys to work with my Acer. But it's not a keyboard problem, as it installs and works faultlessly with any other PC that I try. Something on my Acer seems to be conflicting or blocking those keyboard commands. It's not a showstopper however (though if anyone's got a solution it'd be great!) so I would have no hestitation recommending this product.
A nice, compact keyboard/mouse system
operating system:Windows XPI bought this for my bedroom computer where I didn't really want a seperate keyboard and mouse to get lost in the duvet.
The keyboard aspect itself is good. The keys have a good click quality to them, and the keyboard is nice and thin and light. There is a vast array of multimedia, office and explorer shortcut keys which are really useful.
The touchpad works either as a mouse or as a number keypad. As a mouse it is superbly useable, nicely sensitive, and the non-shiny feel provides proper tactile-feedback. A quick flick of a button changes it to a number pad, something very often missing from wireless keyboards, but very useful indeed.
The touchpad also has multitouch functionality, allowing you to zoom, scroll and change programs. Brilliant.
The only minor problem is that it does quite quickly go into sleep mode, and needs a button-nudge to wake itself up. The positive flip-side of this is the amazing battery life. And the distance-range operation is also very impressive bearing in mind the price.
