Great little hub
operating system:Windows 7These hubs are truly amazing, I've spent more money on branded hubs in the past but none have been as reliable, robust or hardwearing as these. Most hubs I've used have cut-out when a new device is inserted, which is quite annoying when one of those is a printer, or external hard drive, but these keep working at full speed. I'm so impressed I've bought 7 in total.
To clarify the issue with power:
So called 'bus powered' hubs, such as these, that do not plug into the mains electricity supply, draw their power from the computer.
As a result items that draw power are limited to 1, perhaps 2-3 low-power devices per hub. In my experience I have linked 4 of these hubs together (to provide 13 effective ports) and used all of them for non-powered devices such as printers and scanners with no issues.
To go into greater detail: the computer will only output 0.5A at 5v to each connected USB device, be it a hub or a direct connection with a webcam, flash drive, etc... and this means the hub only has 2.5W of power available (amperage x voltage = wattage). Using this you can work out which 'powered devices' you can connect to a hub, simply by avoiding the 2.5W power limit. Looking at the sticker on a device will usually tell you the power requirement, for example a 250mA (0.25A) 5v mouse would draw 1.25W, and so you could (in theory) connect 2 of these successfully to a hub (bearing in mind the hub itself will use a tiny amount of power).
Hopefully that is of help to someone.
Andrew
Perfect...
operating system:OtherDoes what it says it does. I have 3 external hard drives plugged into it and it works perfectly.
Would recommend.
Works well - and cheap at £3.99
operating system:Mac OSXNo complaints about this USB hub. It works well, and is cheap. No problems with Mac OSX.
Compact, & Well Built
operating system:Windows Vistathis is a really compact unit but not too compact i have had 4 devices plugged in at once without problems. It feels really well made with its metal casing not like some of the other cheaper hubs iv had which are made of plastic.
