Superb disc for Media Storage
operating system:LinuxI have bought 5 of these and installed them into a unRAID media tower for storing and streaming HD media content around the house.
They were upgrading 5 x 500G WD 7200rpm drives and boy they make a difference in every aspect.
1. They are faster to read and compute parity than the 500G ones even if they are only 5400rpm. The average gain is about 10MB/s but probably due to higher data density. Still unexpected from a 5400rpm drive.
2. Much quieter. The old drives were making a buzzing noise when all disks were spun up and system was computing / checkng the parity but now all that is gone. These drives are probably the most silent I ever heard in my career as an IT Technician (after my SSDs of course :P)
3. Temperatures are incredible low. When compacting several hard drives in a high density server, cooling becomes a bit of an issue but not with these ones. The WD were operating at 35 C in my well ventilated case in the loft and even peaking 40 during hot days. The F2's did not register more than 28C so far, with an average operating temperature of about 19-20C.
Did not have them long enough to judge the reliability but if HDDs were a reliable storage solution, I wouldn't have needed unRAID for parity. Always consider some sort of redundancy / backup when dealing with large storage solutions.
I will consider these on my future upgrades, unless they get a 2TB version of it :)
Works in Thomson Sky HD Box
operating system:Not ApplicableIf you are thinking about upgrading your Sky Box to 1TB then this is a good, cost effective option. I can't comment on any manufacturer other than Thomson mind.
On delivery the drive did not have any acoustic management enabled. I used Ftool to enable it, I would recommend that it is enabled as the drive access was clearly audible without it.
Nice
This drive is now fitted into my Network Media Tank and works great.
Very quite and streams Video / Audio with no skipping at all.
Nice Drive
operating system:Not ApplicableThis an extremely quiet drive and it has made my SkyHD box very silent, even during playback, rewinding and fast forwarding at the highest speed available even for HD content.
Ebuyer also outperformed themselves as usual by upgrading the delivery to next day. Thanks
