A nice switch for my needs
operating system:OtherNetgear describe these switches as unmanaged, and then they give you a utility program to manage them. So which is it, can you manage them or not?
The answer is yes you can manage them, if all you need is mirroring, VLAN, and QOS. If you want any other features then you're out of luck.
Normally I would suggest that before you buy the product you should download the user manual and check to see if it will do what you want. But it doesn't quite work in this case. Netgear supply the manual on their website (search for: unmanaged plus configuration utility). But the manual covers many switches in this range and the FS116E doesn't have all the features described in the manual.
In particular I was hoping the switch would get an IP address through DHCP and then I would point a web browser to that IP address and start controlling the switch. Some of the switches in this range have this feature, but not the FS116E. Instead I have to run a config utility on a Windows PC and this special utility knows how to talk over the wire to the switch. This means I have to use a Windows machine to do the config, not just any machine.
But fair's fair. Netgear advertise this as a mostly unmanaged switch and I knew it would be cut down in some way. Apart from the web interface it has everything I need for a small office LAN:
* It is completely silent: no fan at all
* Mirror one port to another helps me debug connections
* VLAN lets me separate LAN, DMZ, and phone while only running one switch
* QOS lets me give priority to phone traffic ahead of data traffic
So four stars for all the loverly features. Lose one star for making it difficult to find out which features are missing until I buy one.
