Squeezebox Radio
operating system:Windows VistaI spent a lot of time shopping around for a radio for my kitchen. I originally wanted a DAB radio with iPod dock, but wasn't having much luck finding anything of good value and quality at a decent price.
I then stumbled across this device at the Gadget Show as I was very impressed at what it offers.
It doesn't have DAB, in fact it doesn't receive anything over the air, it links to your router either via cable or wireless.
Setup was quick and easy, though a little fiddly using the turn dial to type out usernames and passwords etc.
The menu is easy to use and choosing a radio source is as simple as clicking on it. Stations buffer quickly, even for ones in other countries and quality varies on the source, but overall is crystal clear and the in-built speaker sounds great.
Your MP3 Player can be plugged into the supplied 3.5mm Jack to play directly off that, or you can download the Squeezebox server software onto your PC and stream your music. The server was simple and fast to configure, and allowed me to share my iTunes library quickly.
The only gripes I would have are that managing your favorite stations is a little cumbersome, you have to tune to the station and hold down the number to store the station, but you can't just set a favorite while browsing.
Occasionally you lose a stream and have to reload it, though I think this will be sorted with later firmware upgrades.
Just need to get the battery back for it so I have listen in the garden!
Good, but overpriced
operating system:Windows 7I got this to use in the kitchen, where radio reception is poor, and it works just fine. However, I'm dismayed by the fact that this radio loses the contents of the preset buttons when the power is removed, which may or may not be alleviated by the addition of a £50 battery (the price includes a remote). I like Logitech products, but I don't like the fact that it appears that they are going the way of Sony and Panasonic, where you can only fit accessories made by the manufacturer, which are always at inflated prices. Even worse, Ebuyer don't stock them, so you have to pay even more P & P to get them. For all that, I have to knock off a couple of stars, sorry.
