Flawless Device
operating system:Windows XPReplacing an FS108v2 100Mbs switch, this device realises the full potential of Gigabit ethernet.
This is a well made, neat product and the web based device browser gives access to menus to control the priority of ports, device firmware updates, traffic monitoring, cable fault detection (after firmware and application update) and virtual ethernet set up.
The device also efficiently shuts down ports that are not in use saving on power consumption.
Data transfers between NAS and video editing pc are lightning fast in comparison to 100Mbs, making editing from the source files on the NAS now a practical proposition and I am further confirmed as a Netgear fan!

Adding gigabit to existing set up.
A lot of debate is going on in different forums as to whether a product like this can be used with an existing fast ethernet (100mbs) router and achieve gigabit speeds when the data is not going through said router.
I 'ummed and aahhed' so much over this because of conflicting reports but with this switch at least, it's fine to do this. The 2 pcs on my network talk to each other at gigabit and talk to my router at 100mbits and then on to my cable modem at a much lower and shameful speed lol.
Only literally just connected it so can't really review it but its doing exactly what I want, and was a lot cheaper than buying a top end router just to get gigabit ports.
Final note, I ordered at about 10pm Wednesday and asked for next day delivery and to be honest I expected it to actually arrive on Friday but it arrived about 10 o'clock the very next morning. Very impressed.
Check firmware version
This switch does weird things, like responding to PINGs to other devices on the network, unless you are running the latest firmware. As of Sept 2011, the latest version is 1.01.16.
Once the firmware is updated (if needed), this is a solid switch.
