Utterly Brilliant
operating system:Windows 7Just built a new PC based upon an i5 750 over-clocked to 3.8ghz on a Gigabyte USB3 P55 m/b. Used SSD as the Windows and programs install drive. Install took just 17 minutes (112gb free to start 88 gb free after windows and A/V). Disk speed on Windows 7 performance index at 7.8!
Everything in the Win7 UI is instant - explorer loads almost before releasing WIN-E keys, any Win program starts within a second or two, loading OS to desktop in 12 secs, and shut down in 4 secs. The best upgrade ever. Will probably get slower over time, but until then I will enjoy.
BTW - Win 7 enabled Trim Support and also write caching - you won't need the caching though.
Just remember to enable AHCI before installing SSD in BIOS.
Highly recommended.
The TRIM strikes back.
The previous reviewer who spoke about the previous reviewer who spoke about the previous reviewer who spoke about the previous reviewer is mistaken.
Although the sandforce controllers in these drives have low level garbage collection it is not a mericle cure. You will still need TRIM to keep the write speed high over time so raid would not be a great idea. This is why I will have to secure ATA erase (not the same as zeroing out) once every few months because I use an operating system that doesn't report TRIM (mac osx). It's a well known problem, even with these drives, amoungst mac users.
Why not 2 X 60gb
The previous reviewer who said that you would be mad to get raid isnt correct. You can get to 60gb drives for the same price as this 120gb, maybe even a few quid less. Put them together in raid 0 and in some instances you can get almost double the performance.
Every1 b careful unless u really feel the need for ahci don't enable.
AHCI doesn't give a gigantic advantage. If you enable you can expect DVD/CD drives to disappear. On disabling after enabling you can expect things like scandisk to totally misread and require a reinstall of windows. This is a messy subject and should be ignored by anyone who just wants an easy life.
The drive itsself is fabulous! I love it! My system is just sooooo much faster! Unbelievable boot times. 60 sec complete load. Thats quite something these days lol.
If you install from the start on this drive then it will work fine - but is not worth the hassle of fiddling if you decide to change to it after OS install.
Use it as a new system disk to install to with an AHCI enabled mobo then great. Otherwise forget AHCI - but will work great anyhow!
