Very good
operating system:Windows 7After installing this and testing the speeds in crystaldisk mark i was shocked, it is so quick, in the sequential read i got 158mb/s! and 150mb/s write! thats quicker than a velociraptor from the reviews i have seen. The write is also quicker than my corsair force 120gb ssd. I am running this in ahci mode and only on a sata II port. All i can say is its impressive really worth the money.
Good drive, but beware
Be aware, this is an advance format drive, so it'll take a bit of TLC to get this running on Windows 7 and vista, and a lot on Windows XP.
If the partitions are laid out wrong, there can be a massive impact on Drive Performance
See http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/storage/2010/04/01/the-facts-4k-advanced-format-hard-disks/1 for a quick overview on Advanced Format Drives
I'd strongly advise using the two tools Western Digital provide to help out:
Acronis True Image WD Edition, to prepare and format the drive: http://support.wdc.com/product/downloaddetail.asp?swid=119&wdc_lang=en
Advance Format Hard Drive Format Utility, to check the partitions are properly optimised: http://www.wdc.com/global/products/features/?id=7&language=1
Using a Windows 7 SP1 Disk on an Intel ICH7 motherboard, the installer couldn't actually format the drive. I had to boot it as a slave drive, and create the first partition using True Image WD.
As a side note, under 7, I'd put Service pack 1, or Hotfix 982018 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982018) on the system as soon as you can, as that fixes a lot of AF Issues.
Installation issues aside, The Drive scores a 5.9 on Windows Experience Index, which I believe is the highest a non-SSD Drive can score. It's performing well at everything I've chucked at it so far, and I'm only running it at 3gbps - It can run at 6gps if the controller supports it.
Acoustics-Wise, you can hear it ticking away, but it's nowhere near as noisy as the Seagate Barracuda drives in the 1TB-2TB range I've used - if you need quiet performance storage, I'd go for the near silent Spinpoint F3 (Not EcoGreen) models, available up to 1TB.
I'm happy with the drive - it's reasonably priced, Solid if not silent performance, and, if you're willing to put up with the pros and cons of running an Advanced Format drive, a solid choice. Four stars, one missing for the installation troubles you could potentially have.
Hope this review saves some of you the installation pain I went through.
WD 2TB advanced format drives
operating system:Windows 7Hey I agree totally with the former reviewer and his excellent in depth and informative compilation.
Well put together and worth the effort.
I am on W7x64 6gb/s on a P5Q Pro Turbo Asus board and its all working well.
5 stars for effort for reviewer above.
5 Stars for the Drives performance.
4 Stars for the mucking about to set it up.
