D-Link DNS-320 ShareCenter Pulse 2-bay (no disks) Product Description

The ShareCenter Pulse Network Storage devices enable users to share documents and media content such as photos, music and videos on a home network or over the Internet. File access is easy and straightforward with the built-in web file server, which allows you to browse and download your stored files over the Internet.

The ShareCenter Pulse has a Gigabit port for the fastest connectivity possible to your home network through your router. RAID 1 technology ensures that your valuable data will not be lost by mirroring the contents of one hard drive onto the other, so if one drive files, your data is still safe.

Its built-in UPnP media server will stream the media content in your ShareCenter Pulse to any compatible media player - such as the PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, and D-Link Boxee Box - over your local network. ShareCenter Pulse allows for multiple simultaneous streams, so you can watch a movie on your entertainment center while someone else listens to music streamed into their computer.

The confidentiality and integrity of files is guaranteed as you can give rights to specific users or groups and assign them to folders with specific read/write permissions. This function is ideal for the home, where children's access can be restricted to only age-appropriate materials, while ensuring that nobody can delete your files by accident.

The DNS-320 ShareCenter Pulse is part of D-Link Green, D-Link's program for providing eco-friendly alternatives without compromising performance: if the hard drives are not used in a configurable period of time, or data is not being transmitted, the ShareCenter Pulse will enter stand-by mode to save power. Also, the silent fan will adapt its speed depending on the hard drives temperature.

Great NAS drive!!

Didn't use the installation CD which came with the DLink NAS drive after reviewing the comments previously made on the product. Plugged the NAS drive into the mains power and Cat 5 cable into my router. This left me to access the device settings via the IP address, just like setting up a router i.e. typing 192.168.0.190 (IP will be different for you of course) into web browser then username 'admin' password *blank*. Use the configuration option to change the different option

There is an initial wizard (under the setup tab) which I believe will format the hard drive you put in (in my case, I have a Samsung HD204UI Spinpoint F4 2TB Hard Drive SATA 5400RPM 32MB Cache - quickfind code 237908) - I can't really remember now! There are a few options for this including standard NTFS, RAID 0 and RAID 1. I just went with standard and it was sorted pretty quickly. It also lets you change date and time and the network 'workgroup' (just put in the workgroup name you use for you network in windows - if you don't know this, right click on 'my computer' and click properties) - this will allow the drive to be viewed on your network.

If you are using this as a UPnP server, go to the 'advanced' tab and choose 'UPnP AV server' then click enable. Then add a shared folder (in my case 'volume_1). This will then start to check the drive for all the different media files you've got, and will check when you put more on.

Now you can map your network drive in windows (if you haven't already), and start filling your drive up and access it from any device with UPnP.

I have my netbook, main desktop PC, two Xbox 360s and BluRay players (with UPnP) all accessing this device. The beauty is, my wife can watch a film from the Xbox downstairs and I can watch one at the same time on the Xbox upstairs without having to turn on the power hungry PCs!!

Definitely worth buying! 5 stars easily (would give it six if I could)

Pleasantly surprised

I wanted a NAS enclosure which could take a couple of hard drives (for possible RAID 1 or expansion to >2TB if I feel the urge), and would be enough storage for backup of a few machines and media serving duties. At under £70 when I ordered, this fit the bill nicely. I've fitted the NAS with a single Samsung F4 5400rpm 2TB disk. On plugging the box into the network and going to the web interface it happily formatted itself in a few minutes. (haven't used the installation disk, nor looked up what's on it)

From there on in, the NAS is happy to share media via uPnP (including to a DLNA TV) and act as an itunes server. Needless to say, it can also be mapped as a network drive and has so far been accessible from all the remote devices I have tried (Windows 7, XP, Ubuntu, Android phone).

Contrary to the other reviewer, my DNS-320 seemed quite happy when I plugged in an external hard drive (though the specs say it only supports FAT32 or NTFS (read only) via USB). This is the opposite of the internal hard drives, which are formatted as EXT3. I tried plugging in an internal EXT3 hard drive with some data on it, and the NAS didn't seem to want to let me access the disk until it had been reformatted, which was a very mild annoyance.

To my Samsung F4 in the NAS I seem to be able to read/write at ~10MB/s over 100Mb ethernet, and over (slightly flaky) gigabit I get a touch less than 30/20MB/s read/write respectively.

All in all, very pleased - A very nice upgrade from my now defunct Linkstation 120.

Excellent NAS

Once the drives formatted and drive was mapped it was like having the drive in the computer. Having 3 laptops and 2 pcs in the house i have found it essential to have a shared drive. Backup and transfer. Data transfer speed seem alot fast than the DNS-313 i had before and its cheaper. Work that out!!!!

All in all very impressed

Excellent, and easy to add extra features

operating system:Linux

I bought this as my first ever NAS for use as a media server mainly.
The basic set up is idoit proof, just type the ip into your address bar and follow the on screen instructions to set up user groups and quotas etc.

After a couple of days the basic functionality was annoying me - i wanted to be able to use the bit-torrent out and about etc, so after a quick google i found the site 'nas-tweaks'. There are instructions here on how to 'hack' into your NAS and add extra functionality, i now have a fully working LAMP (webserver) setup and Transmission bittorrent which i can access remotely. All of this would normally set you back at least double this amount, and is an excellent feature.

Would recommend this product to anyone, even if you dont add the extra features that the 'fun_pug' offers.
