don't rely on core unlocking!
"You can turn this in to an x4 with asus core unlocking mother boards."
no.... there is a POSSIBILITY of it unlocking, it's not a certainty. at best it's 50/50 that you'll get one that can unlock, let alone is stable once unlocked. if you need 4 cores, buy an x4, thngs are so cheap now anyway. just don't put all your hopes into getting an x3 that will unlock & be stable.
look for motherboards with core unlocking/ACC/UCC/whatever other crazy terms they're using for it, most companies offer it as standard on amd boards now. it's a nice bonus to get an extra core for free, but it's not a guarantee.
Exellent Budget Processor, + got lucky.
I got this due to my 2.8 dual core Athlon II just not cutting it any more. Wanting to get something for a low cost but also high GHz due to running games (mainly source engine based) that sap the CPU rather than my GPU.
I got lucky on this, it arrived today and as I already had an Athlon II processor I plugged it in and it more or less acted like a plug & play install. Loaded into windows, updated drivers and told me to restart. Didn't even need to re-install windows. Great! (note, not all setup's will act like this, I was lucky as my old CPU was very similar architecture).
Also it wasn't a 3 core... that or my mobo unlocked it as soon as I plugged it in, maybe they activated the final core by accident. All I know is I got a £65 3.3Ghz quad core processor... bargain.
Amazing bang for buck
operating system:Windows XPWas building a PC for my Dad and got this Athlon II X3 455 3.3GHz in conjunction with an Asus M5A78L-M LX AM3+ motherboard with core unlock feature which worked effortlessly and flawlessly for me :) This chip in standard form at the price I paid is great value as it performs imho within about 80-90% levels of more expensive chips for 50-60% of the price.
But once you unlock it and it turns into a Phenom II X4 B55 then it really does perform as well as chips costing twice as much such as the Phenom II X4 955/965, because it is effectively one at this point running at 3.3GHz, albeit with slightly less cache.
Running Star Wars The Old Republic at 1680x1050 with medium settings it runs pretty smooth with the Radeon HD6850 I also got for this build, with the Radeon being the bottleneck. I imagine using an HD6870 for about 25 quid more would make for an amazing budget build gaming PC.
Put it this way I'm running an Intel i5 2500k @ 4.3GHz with a motherboard costing 4x as much as the one above, and a GTX480, and I'm impressed with the AMD setup.... for way more than twice the overall cost, I'm certainly not getting twice the performance...
4 core can be unlocked
operating system:Windows 7You can turn this in to an x4 with asus core unlocking mother boards.
Its very fast as it is scoring 7 in windows rating with 4 cores it scores 7.3
Highly recommended processor my mother board cost £35 to do this.
