Better than first Version
operating system:Windows 7I bought the first version of this nettop but sent it back since there were a number problems most serious of which was that it would not display a picture under HDMI. But it was silent so I decided to try again. Took no more than 20 minutes to build, 30 mins to install windows and then a ridiculous 5 hours for all the updates to get installed.
This version of the Shuttle works splendidly for me. It has a slightly higher spec, not that that matters much for an internet surfing machine. Most importantly the ION graphics mean it can play Bluray (I use Power DVD and an external USB burner). Fine for general windows, internet and general entertainment purposes. I have it sat on my desk. With an OCZ Vertex and 4GB Corsair Ram it still takes 50 seconds to boot.
Minor Issues:
1. Top of the machine can get a bit hot. I've read about people running it 24/7 but I would not.
2. Can't update the Nvidia drivers. The device is not recognised. The issue is with Nvidia and it is up to them to sort it. It was reported in May and as of end of July they still have not done the necessary. There is a hack where you can add the device ID yourself, available via Nvidia ION Forums, but hardly seems worth the effort.
3. Seems to default to wireless internet. I had to disable the adapter so I could get the wired LAN as a priority. The included Shuttle control software for this is pants.
Big positive is that you have beautiful silence for a net top. Does what it says and is good for a quiet second PC.
Good system let down by simple issues
operating system:Windows XPI bought this, a WD 250GB HDD, 2GB Crucial RAM and a DVD Writer all from eBuyer. The installation was easy enough except for the following:
- The HDD screws provided by Shuttle as of the wrong type. HDD holds have high threads but the screws were short threaded.
- The Optical drive screw is very short and you'd need to push the DVD up to tighten the screw.
- The power cable provided in the UK is of the wrong type. The UK plug cable has a three hole end but the Shuttle adapter takes in a two whole one. There is a European cable with the right end in the box so I guess you're supposed to throw the UK one away and get a EU/UK converter.
- One thing that is not very clear in the specs is the number of RAM sockets. This system takes only one, up to 4GB.
Installing Windows XP was easy enough and the drivers DVD has all you need for XP.
I am going to use this as an always-on iTunes server connected to my QNAP NAS so not much is expected from it.
