Great little Box with WHS 2011
operating system:OtherI had spent quite some time searching the web for a cheap server set-up that could be used for a typical file server for me and my family and after numerous different products I came across this little thing. From what i can see at this current time is that Ebuyer and HP have recently upgraded this server's spec to a slightly better processor and some more RAM but i went and purchased the Kingston DDR3 1066mhz cl-5 RAM to make 4GB and bought some Seagate Barracuda 2TB green drives as i found out that these were great products to use within my price range. I am currently satisfied with this little product as its very handy with all the tools that come with it as they all store on the inside of the door which is handy along with how easy it is to access the motherboard apart from the SAS clip which mine was a bugger to unplug. But other than this it is a great little box. Note: whisper quiet where it is stored and do not have sound issues with it as some others may have issues about.
May invest with some more of these in the near future....
Don't hesitate, just buy it now!
operating system:Not ApplicableOrdered this on Tuesday night at about 10:00 and it arrived lunchtime on Wednesday - great service from ebuyer as usual!
The photo on the product page doesn't really do this machine any justice as it makes it look quite bland. In reality it looks much better, and isn't something that needs to be hidden away in the cupboard under the stairs or the attic. It's not quite in the same league as an Apple product, but you'd pay three or four times as much if it had been blessed with Jonathan Ive's magical touch.
Once I got over the initial shock of just how dinky this server is I was pleasantly surprised to discover that HP hasn't cut any corners on the build quality - it's very solidly made. It also has some useful features such as the ability to easily open the case up without the need for screwdrivers, or the ability to effortlessly just slide the mobo out of the case. The inclusion of a small Allen key that is housed on the inside of the door at the front of the case, plus the copious number of screws for attaching your HDDs - again secured within the door - was a nice touch that didn't go unnoticed.
I replaced the supplied 2GB ECC memory with some Kingston 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 Non-ECC memory (Quickfind 172949) that I ordered at the same time... it cost me £30 - absolute bargain! I was initially worried it may not be recognised as HP state you should use ECC memory, but I needn't have worried as it was instantly picked up by the Microserver. Depending upon what you're planning on using this for, you could get away with just running the 2GB RAM that's supplied by HP.
I've now installed Ubuntu on this box and it runs perfectly. I was able to install it from a USB stick plugged into so didn't need to borrow a DVD drive temporarily just for the OS installation. Think it took me about 15 minutes to get Ubuntu up and running... wasn't paying attention but remember thinking it was quicker than I anticipated it to be. SABnzbd, Sickbeard and Couchpotato have now been installed too, and they all work seamlessly with XBMC running on my HTPC. In the future I may make this an HTPC, but would look to upgrade the graphics card if I do decide to do this.
I was expecting there to be some noise when the server was running but was pleasantly surprised to find that it's virtually silent in operation. The noise from the hard drives is louder than the 120mm fan on the back of the case... and they're quiet themselves!
I can't recommend this machine highly enough. With the £100 cashback from HP making the final cost of the machine only £150, it's an absolute steal. I'm considering buying another before the cashback deal expires, it's that much of a bargain. I just wish that 3TB hard drives weren't so uneconomical at the moment.
Brilliant piece of kit
operating system:Not ApplicableI recently bought one of these Microservers. This latest model has a slightly beefed-up spec compared to the one eBuyer were selling a few months ago. The CPU is now a 2x1.5GHz AMD N40L as opposed to 2x1.2GHz N36L, and the RAM has doubled from 1GB to 2GB. I installed Debian Squeeze on it and have been using it primarily as a NAS and Torrent box, but it also has enough power to be a useful media transcoder - using Mencoder it'll happily do a two-pass DVD-to-AVI transcode in better-than-real-time, which allows me to keep my main PC free for more urgent tasks, like Alien v Predator :)
Build quality is top-notch, hard drive installation is simple thanks to the pop-in-pop-out drive bays (not hot swappable) and there's an Allen key with ample screws all attached inside the (lockable) front door.
At £239 the server is great value, but at £139 it's a positive steal, and the way things are going, will soon be worth buying it purely for the hard drive...
