DS212J - Awesomeness!
operating system:Mac OSXThis product is fantastic. I bought this along with one of the WD 2TB Green drives and installing the drive could not have been easier.
Once switched on I followed the instructions to get the disk formatted and the DSM software installed - this was also straightforward.
However, from this point on it got a bit trickier. Understanding what this thing is capable of, and how to achieve it took a couple of days of studying the manual and browsing the excellent forum Synology have. Eventually though, after some port-forwarding on my BT Homehub I got it all up and running, and it's working a treat!
To conclude, this is a fantastic product packed with cool features, with an invaluable support network, it's highly recommended. Setting up for internal LAN use is easy enough, but getting it externally available is not for the computer illiterate - but that would be the same for any system of this nature I suppose.
For me it's this support, the forum and the assorted tutorials and FAQs that make this a 5 star review. Without them I'd only be using a fraction of what this beast is capable of.

operating system:Windows 7I recently ordered the Synology 212j and so far have been incredibly impressed with it. The interface, applications and features are all by far more than I'd expected from a simple NAS.
I've been using the media server without the issue mentioned by another reviewer. I'm running DSM 3.2, not sure if that makes a difference.
In future I'll be tempted by a more powerful model, but for the price this item is phenomenal.
Performance is terrible!
operating system:LinuxSearch the synology forums and you'll see that many people are amazed by how bad the performance is.
If you enable the media server (and who wouldn't?) then this device tries to generate thumbnails of all uploaded photos etc.
Fair enough, except that it will take literally WEEKS at 100% CPU to do so.
There are some workarounds posted but they're compromises and why should you.
Synology seem to have their heads in the sand and are dis-regarding this issue.
Really, DON'T BUY ONE unless you want nothing except a Samba server.
