wd tv live
operating system:LinuxHi all received my wd tv live 28/01/12 and oh what a great piece of kit this is (wish I had bought it sooner) for £80 bargain. It was between this and the boxee box but the boxee box was just too expensive, the wd tv live ticked all my boxes and then some even when the unit is off if you have a usb hard drive attached it will act like a nas for the rest of the network great stuff.
When you first switch on it finds your network and once joined it will find the new update (20/01/12) which has BBC iplayer and netflix, I left my bthub at b/g wireless to do a test and it played 720p mkv well over wifi but stuttered on 1080p mkv with dts, I then changed wifi to n and wow a 3d 1080p mkv dts file and iso's over wifi to my none dts lg 550t 3d tv just the job I did have to buy a hdmi cable (QuickFind Code: 193821) for £6 but up-to now I am one very happy satisfied customer.
Fantastic
operating system:Windows 7I have 2 of these and am just about to get a third.
We have all our films on a server over a Gb LAN but I have used them on WiFi and as long as you have a good signal you will be fine. BBCi player stalles at 1080P over wifi so I gave that up and hard wired the units with no issues now.
It is great to have a little unit like this instead of DVD players and piles of discs lay about in the childrens bedrooms.
I also have the "WDlxTV MediaPlayers Remote" app for my phone which costs less than a pound and runs all the units over wifi rather than the IR remote as supplied. It allows me to keep the little box hidden.
Oh and it plays anything I have thrown at it so far. Brilliant.
Just one thing to note, my first one I connected a 2TB drive full of music and films to it and it just said no new content and the light flashed. The light is telling you it is getting the content. It will take a while; that drive took over 24 hours. I now just use the server so that it does not have to rescan the media when I unplug a usb drive.
I have used a 500Gb drive with about 100 films on and it takes about 20min to get the content.
Ensure you update the firmware before you do anything.
Incredible but not future proof
Beautiful bit of kit allows streaming of 3D and 1080p MKV files from a PC with no stutter or sound drop outs via the gigabit LAN port.
Also allows pictures and music and has the usual 2-3 good apps like YouTube and Netflix and 20 others no one ever uses.
Be aware that MKV files are more and more being encoded with 10-bit colour depth but this device and most others currently on the market only supports 8-bit.
5/5 for the device right now.
Works like a dream
operating system:Windows VistaBeen using this for a week now. It works like a dream.
On powering it on, it found my home network and internet connection, then downloaded the firmware update. Got it up and running in no time straight out of the box.
The streamer iis actually quite small, about 4 inches by 4 inches, so it doesn't take up much space at all.
It even recognised the USB drives that were plugged into my NAS drives. However, it didn't seem to recognise the USB drive that was plugged directly into the streamer itself, which is strange.
