Server ECC Memory (6 products)

ECC, or Error Correcting Code memory, is RAM used by many businesses in their servers to protect the integrity of their network. ECC will detect and, importantly, fix single-bit errors. It's why this type of memory is so popular with datacentres, or any business processing critical data where it is essential to minimise the risk of system failure or data corruption.

Choosing the most reliable and high-performance server memory will significantly reduce the risk of issues within the network. Here at Ebuyer, you can find all the ECC memory modules you need from the leaders in the technology including industry giants such as HPE and Dell, as well as other leading brands such as Kingston.

Prevent data loss

As technology develops businesses depend more on data, and the so anything they can do to prevent the loss of crucial date is vitally important. When data is stored temporarily, it is most as risk and this is where RAM, ECC (Error Correcting Code) protects your system from potential crashes and inadvertent changes in data. This works because there is an extra chip on the RAM board which actually oversees the other eight chips and corrects anything which should not have happened. Is it more expensive than non-ECC RAM? Barely, yet the added protection it provides is crucial to the smooth running of businesses.

How does ECC Operate?

If there are errors and hard faults in disk storage, these can be prevented with solutions such as mirrored RAID, where the same identical data is written on to two separate disks, but the information in RAM is different. RAM is fast, short-term, volatile storage and is not mirrored. Difficulties arise when errors occur as we are accessing data. How can that be controlled and eliminated?

What is parity?

Prior to the introduction of EEC, error detection was done through Parity Bits. This was where computer data was stored in 8-bit groups called bytes. As we mentioned above, a ninth bit was used to check for errors. How was this done? Even and odd parity work by adding a bit of 0 or 1 at the end of each byte to make it even or odd. For example, if even parity was used and the bits in the byte added to an odd number such as 7, the parity bit would be 1, resulting in an even number of 8. If an even parity byte evaluates to an odd number, it means that the byte is corrupt and will be reloaded. Take a minute to go through again as it is not as complicated as it first seems.

Why is ECC memory important?

For example: If your business works within the finance sector and your server crashes because of a memory error while you are completing a transaction, the transaction will be lost. These memory errors can also lead to other issues that could cost your company dearly. They can lead to data transcription errors where is number can be changed or a decimal point could be missing altogether. In banking or share-dealing, that simple decimal point could equate to many thousands of pounds, or even more. You might not even know that the error has occurred, and it could take days or weeks before the problem is spotted. There is always the change that the problem may never be spotted at all, which could put your business significantly out of pocket.

Crucial data protection

For all types of businesses where record accuracy is vitally important, such as in hospitals, GP surgeries, opticians and many others, an extra layer of error checking provided by ECC is critical to people's health. Employees may be inputting diagnosis codes and these need to be recorded and secured. Without ECC, your important data may be saved as a different code or could simply be corrupted, making it much more difficult to track patients properly. Not only could this severely affect the health of patients but it could also cause serious ramifications when reviewed by another specialist or the insurance company. The medical industry is just one area where EEC memory is a necessity.
