Netgear DG834 ADSL Modem Router Product Description
All-in-one Gateway for Always-on Broadband Access with Internet Sharing
Four products in one, The NETGEAR DG834 is a multitalented firewall router combining an ADSL modem, router, four-port 10/100 LAN switch, and SPI Double Firewall to deliver broadband access that’s continuously available for sharing with all your networked devices.
Simple to use, the NETGEAR DG834 plugs directly into your ADSL line for instant connectivity to network resources and the Internet, and an integrated switch lets you directly connect up to four computers or any combination of four computers, access points or printers.
Setup couldn’t be easier with NETGEAR’s unique Smart Wizard install assistant helps to guide you each step of the way. The Smart Wizard also automatically detects and makes the optimal connection to your ISP. The NETGEAR DG834 contemporary, sleek design suits your home or office, and it’s wall mountable to save valuable desk space. Upgradeable with new enhancements via the Internet.
Ultra-capable
One router supplies your network with impressive capabilities. A built-in ADSL modem furnishes direct, always-on Internet connectivity and multi-user access sharing at speeds up to 140 times faster than dial-up. The NETGEAR DG834 distributes MP3s, digital movies and photos with ultra-fast 10/100 switched LAN ports capable of speeds of 200 Mbps and and shares a single IP address with all the networked devices in your home. Upgradeable to ADSL 2+ for speeds up to 24 Mbps.
Hassle Free
No need for a separate modem – NETGEAR DG834 connects directly into your ADSL line. Built-in Port Forwarding settings, Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) make it simple to play Internet games, send instant messages, and host Internet services. User interface matches your local language (English, French, German or Italian). It supports PCs, Macintosh®, and virtually all Ethernet devices, and comes with a free Ethernet cable for connecting your first computer.
Secure
The NETGEAR DG834 Double Firewall using Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) and Intrusion Control features Denial of Service protection from hacker attacks, while VPN (Virtual Private Network) pass-through permits secure access to your office or corporate network and enables you to host VPN services. Content filtering lets you control access to inappropriate web sites and limit usage by time of day. Logs browsing activities and provides optional e-mail alerts so you can monitor access. DMZ support allows unrestricted access from the Internet to one computer (for hosting web services).
Please note: networking components such as switches, routers and wireless devices require that speeds & standards be consistent throughout the network to gain optimum performance. To avoid compatibility clashes or for advice, please contact us on solutions@ebuyer.com.

Excellent piece of gear
operating system:Not ApplicableSetup
-----
Installing this product was a matter of seconds. I'm currently connecting Win98, Mac0s 9/X, Linux Debian Kernel 2.4.
I've easily upgraded the firmwire to 1.03.00;
Stability
---------
My ISP is freedom2surf.net and I have never experienced any disconnections in the three months I had this router.
Features
--------
Nat, Firewall and DHCP are working with no problems whatsoever. If you think of getting a router without a firewall - don't.
All other features seem to work as well.
Ease of use
-----------
Configuration is very easy. And the help side-bar on the configuration screen means you will probably never look at any manuals.
Customer support
----------------
Having called few times already, Netgear customer support (24/7 based in India for UK customers) will answer in seconds. The representatives are not amazingly fluent, but with a bit of help from their supervisiors you will always get an answer at the end. NOTE THAT IF YOU NEED LINUX SUPPORT, YOU WILL HAVE TO CALL THE AMERICAN SUPPORT LINE AND PAY AROUND 2$ A MINUTE - DISGRACE!. Also, Netgear support number is different from the one given on the router leaflet and it's now: 0870 1121206.
Linux
-----
With my Debian I had to install DHCP3-client to make it communicate with the router.
Cons
----
This router can only be configured using port 80. It's a shame that such a quality product does not come with the basic option of changing the configuration port. This will result in a problem if you are running virtual hosts behind this router (putting the address of www.mydomain.tld on a LAN computer will give you the router login dialog instead of your website). A work around this is to change the Hosts file (exists for Windows, MacOS, Linux).
All in all, an excellent product.
Great value for money and comes with a microfilter!
operating system:OtherAfter much research I bought Netgear. Why?
1. ADSL2/2+ compatibility
2. Well-known brand
3. Despite several poor reviews in the past, so many good recent reviews, and the product is into version 2.
Open the box and you find:
* The router, about the size of two stacked bars of chocolate and very attractive
* Its mains transformer
* Clip-on feet so you can stand the router on its end
* A microfilter. You don't need to buy one separately. EBuyer, please revise the description of this item to make this clear!
* Cat 5 LAN cable
* RJ11 modem/ADSL cable
* CD with documentation and startup wizard.
If you are accustomed to seeing all those hack attempts in ZoneAlarm then you will enjoy the lack of anything in your ZA logs after you install this. Set a new rule in the router to duplicate the preset Inbound rule but with logging, and there you'll see the old foes, hammering impotently on your nice NATed network.
Instead of buying wireless (slower than advertised, client overhead for encryption, questionable security), get yourself a crimper, some RJ45 plugs and some Cat 5, lift the carpet, and lay yourself a real network.
And remember: you cannot wardrive Cat 5.
IMPORTANT WARNING ABOUT FIRMWARE UPGRADE
Nota Bene the numerous warnings on the internet dated January 2004 about upgrading the firmware on the device. Apparently the latest version causes the unit to crash and it can't be restarted (or the firmwear reset to working)! I do hope that EBuyer pass this on as despite their being lumbered with more than 4000 of these units the first thing that most people will try to do is upgrade the firmware! Still worth 5 stars with the old firmware.
Brilliant
operating system:Windows XPIf you want easy full control over your firewall, i reccomend this one by netgear. Its so simple to set up and configure i have seen a few newbies do it in seconds. It only comes with one filter mind you, so if you just got broadband i would buy a few 99p ebuyer extra value filters as they work perfectly. Its stable, gives great status reports and you can backup your setting to a file just incase ;). This is the router to buy dispite its UFO look
