What's a Micro-ATX Computer Case?

Micro-ATX computer cases are the smallest out of all the ATX form-factor cases. As the name implies, they're designed for 9.6" x 9.6" Micro-ATX motherboards, rather than full-sized 12" x 9.6" ATX motherboards. Micro-ATX cases support Micro-ATX and smaller Mini-ITX motherboards but not standard ATX ones.

This reduction in the height of the motherboard is reflected in the size and shape of Micro-ATX computer cases. Compared to mid-tower cases, Micro-ATX cases are stout, boxy, and as a result more optimised for space. Most mid-tower and Micro-ATX cases are of a similar width and depth, but Micro-ATX cases can be a fair bit shorter.

That said, if you're looking to build the smallest form-factor system possible - whether it's an ultra-fast, ultra-compact gaming rig or a small home theatre PC that'll fit in a television cabinet - you should take a look at Mini-ITX cases.

Why Should I Buy a Micro-ATX Computer Case? - Mini-ITX vs Micro-ATX Cases

While Micro-ATX computer cases aren't quite as small as Mini-ITX cases, they're still smaller than mid-tower cases, sometimes by a considerable margin. Really, out of all the computer cases, we'd say that Micro-ATX cases strike the best balance between compactness, ease of building in, expandability, and hardware compatibility.

Compactness & Ease Of Building

As noted on the Mini-ITX computer case page, building in a Mini-ITX case can feel like playing a real-life game of Tetris. Mini-ITX cases can be a bit fiddly to build in as they're so small, and they have very limited room for hardware. Everything's packed tightly together, so you have to awkwardly manoeuvrer components around other components to install them. You rarely can simply slot something in. They're not the easiest to work with, especially if it's your first time building a PC. Not to mention how finicky cable management is as, unlike most ATX form-factor cases, there's no power supply shroud the stuff all the loose cables under.

So, if you want a computer case that's small but still easy to build in, we'd recommended Micro-ATX cases. Sure, in many instances Micro-ATX cases aren't truly 'small form-factor' cases, but they make for a much for simple, straightforward building experience. Their layout is very similar to what you'd find in mid-tower cases, but just shrunk down a bit. There's space behind the motherboard tray to route and organise cables, the aforementioned power supply shroud, additional 2.5" and 3.5" drive bays, and so on.

Hardware Compatibility

Hardware compatibility is also considerably higher on Micro-ATX computer cases. After all, most hardware is designed for the popular ATX form-factor. You often need to purchase specific 'small form-factor' and 'low-profile' components for Mini-ITX cases - which fetch a premium, too. On the other hand, you can fit standard ATX form-factor power supplies in Micro-ATX cases, and you'll have a much better chance of fitting triple-slot graphics cards and hefty CPU coolers in a Micro-ATX case. But, as always, it's best to check a component's dimensions against a case's dimensions before buying.

Expandability

Also, it's worth noting that due to their increased size, Micro-ATX motherboards usually feature additional ports for expandability than Mini-ITX motherboards: more DIMM slots for RAM, more M.2 slots for SSDs, and more PCIe slots for add-in cards. So, with a Micro-ATX case and motherboard, you'll have a system that's easier to grow and expand in the future.
