PlayStation Exclusive Games

When it comes down to it, the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are very similar boxes at a hardware level. Gone are the days of consoles being wildly different from one another, though Nintendo's still off doing their own thing. Both the PS5 and XSX feature a custom AMD system-on-chip of comparable performance. On paper, the Xbox Series X is faster, but for the most part this isn't born out in real-world gaming scenarios. If an Xbox Series X can run a game at 4K/30FPS, a PlayStation 5 more than likely will, too.

Consoles are defined by their games, not their hardware, and PlayStation's got some of the best games in the business. God of War: Ragnarök, Marvel's Spider-Man 2, Gran Turismo 7, and more: many of the generation's highest-rated games are console-exclusive to PlayStation; you won't find them on Xbox or Nintendo's platforms. And for many gamers, older PlayStation consoles may very well have started their love of gaming in the first place. Classic PlayStation games are available on the PlayStation Store and as part of the PlayStation Plus subscription service to scratch that nostalgic itch.

What TV is Best for PlayStation 5?

To take full advantage of the PlayStation 5's processing power and graphical capabilities, you'll want to hook it up to a 4K television or monitor. 4K isn't the only resolution supported by the PS5, mind you, but it's what the console was largely designed for.

By default, most PlayStation 5 games target a 4K output (native or upscaled) at 30 frames-per-second. If it's connected to a lower resolution display, the PS5 will 'downsample' this 4K output instead. This is great if you've still got an older 1080p TV or a 1440p monitor, though you'll miss out on that 4K goodness. Alternatively, some games offer up a 'performance mode', dropping a game's resolution in favour of 60FPS or sometimes even 120FPS. You'll want a high-refresh rate display for 120FPS, however.

PlayStation 5-Compatible SSDs

While the launch model of the PlayStation 5 came equipped with an unorthodox-sized 825GB solid-state drive, the revised slim model was bumped up to a full 1TB of storage capacity. For many, this still isn't enough storage with how big triple-A games have gotten. A complete install of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III weighs in at over 200GB, for example. So on a stock PS5, you'll only have enough room to install a handful of big games and game updates at a time. This can be problematic for those who've got slow internet; deleting and re-downloading games as needed isn't a viable solution.

Fortunately, upgrading the PlayStation 5's storage is easy thanks to its user-accessible M.2 slot. Unlike the Xbox Series S and X, which rely on proprietary 'expansion cards', the PS5 is compatible with off-the-shelf PCIe Gen4 NVMe drives, so long as they're as fast as the PlayStation 5's internal 5,500MB/s drive. Also, it's strongly recommended that this drive be installed with a heatsink for heat management. To make finding a suitable drive easier, we've got a page dedicated to PS5-compatible SSDs.

PlayStation Controllers & Accessories

A PlayStation console includes a 'DualSense' controller in the box. The DualSense, with its unrivalled haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, is one of the best game controllers on the market, and you can get it working under Windows with some finagling. If you're in need of another game controller, whether it's for some couch co-op gaming or you just need a spare, we stock PS5 DualSense controllers in a range of colours and styles.

PlayStation VR2

There's another trick up PlayStation's sleeve: virtual reality. PlayStation, with their PlayStation VR2 headset, are the only console manufacturer to support virtual reality in any serious capacity - no, we're not counting Nintendo's brief stint with Labo.

Powered by the PlayStation 5, PlayStation VR2 is a fantastic introduction to the world of virtual reality, one that doesn't require a high-spec PC or complicated set-up. Be sure to check out our blog PlayStation VR2 Review - OLED HDR Displays, Eye-Tracking, & More for an in-depth look at the console virtual reality headset.
