Solid State Drives (212 products)

A solid-state drive (SSD) is faster, more reliable, and more efficient than your ordinary mechanical hard drive (HDD). SSDs are ideal for use in laptops, but they're also a great pick for desktops, with snappy start-up times and silent operation. Another plus point is how easy SSDs are to install, often slotting straight into a computer's motherboard.

Why Should I Buy a Solid-State Drive?

Unlike mechanical hard drives, which are comprised of several moving pieces, solid-state drives are all-digital storage devices. You won't find a spinning platter or a motor inside a SSD, but rather flash memory modules, a memory controller, and optionally some DRAM cache soldered to a mainboard. This all-digital design lends SSDs a number of advantages over HDDs.

For one, and most importantly, solid-state drives effectively have no 'seek time'. When data is requested from a SSD, it can be accessed pretty much instantaneously as no mechanical operation has to take place. Data's read off the flash storage modules right there-and-then, rather than waiting around for a read-write head to align itself with a platter, like with a HDD. This near complete lack of seek times is what makes SSDs feel so snappy and responsive. The actual read-write speed of a SSD is dictated by the performance of these modules and the interface it's in: SATA, PCIe Gen3, PCIe Gen4, and so on.

Solid-state drives are more durable and less prone to damage than hard drives. It's important for a HDD to be laid completely flat and not moved during operation as even a slight jolt or vibration can send its read-write head, or 'needle', scratching over its platter, damaging it. Of course, you wouldn't want to slam a SSD on the ground either, but you can casually chuck a SSD-equipped laptop or external SSD into a backpack without fear of data loss. You have to be much more cautious and tentative with a hard drive in comparison.

And as there are no moving pieces consuming power in solid-state drives, they're more energy efficient than hard drives, too. This can affect a laptop's battery life, for example. Between the faster performance, increased durability, and higher efficiency, most of not all laptops have made the switch to SSD storage.

Should I choose SSD or HDD?

Solid-state drives have become the industry standard. If you're buying a new laptop or building a gaming desktop, it really ought to have SSD storage somewhere in it. For the time being, hard drives can offer better 'price-per-gigabyte', and they're available in considerably larger capacities. But as SSDs become more and more prevalent, these prices differences are rapidly shrinking.

For those who've got an older, HDD-equipped computer still kicking around, upgrading it with a SSD can breathe new life into it. Even without swapping out its processor, storing your computer's operating system and all your essential apps and programs on a solid-state drive will make everything feel that bit snappier and more responsive: reaching the log-in screen from a cold boot will take seconds (as opposed to minutes on a hard drive), there'll be less buffering while navigating the file explorer, and programs will launch faster.

If you're wondering what's the difference between the types of SSD, check out our blog NVMe SSD vs SATA SSD vs HDD - Speed Comparison. Alternatively, click through to the 2.5" SSD and M.2 SSD sub-categories for further in-depth information on each.

What's the best solid-state drive?

As of now, PCIe Gen5 SSDs are the very best SSDs money can buy. These ludicrously fast drives started to hit the market in early 2023, a little while after the release of the first PCIe Gen5-compatible processors and motherboards.

PCIe Gen5 SSDs achieved read/write speeds of up to 10,000 MB/s right out of the gate, and they've only gotten faster with newer models. For context, PCIe Gen4 SSDs typically top out at around 7,000MB/s, which, mind you, is still plenty faster for most peoples' workloads.

As mentioned, you need a PCIe Gen5-compatible system to take advantage of PCIe Gen5 SSDs. This includes systems powered by 12th/13th-Gen Intel Core or AMD Ryzen 7000 Series processors. PCIe Gen5 SSDs can get pretty toasty when running at such blisteringly speeds and, as such, we recommend picking up a model with an integrated heatsink to help mitigate thermal throttling under heavy load.

Can I install a solid-state drive in a PlayStation 5?

Firmware updates to the PlayStation 5 since launch have made it possible to install a secondary solid-state drive in the console. However, you can't slot any old SSD in and expect it to work. It must meet the specification laid out by Sony, which comprises of a PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD with a recommended read speed of 5,500 MB/s or faster.

It's also strongly recommended the drive be equipped with a heatsink, so that it doesn't overheat in the PlayStation 5's enclosed drive bay. But this heatsink can't be too big either, otherwise it won't fit. So, make sure to do your homework to find the right SSD for your PS5.

Not sure where to start? Don't worry, we've done the hard work for you. Browse our selection of PS5-compatible SSDs and take your PS5's storage to the next level.
