Good product, be careful with fireware upgrade
operating system:Windows XPHaving ordered one of these for a client I set-up the box using the wizard, changed a couple of the DHCP setting and routes.
I found the Services and Rules pages did not work with the firmware shipped so tried to upgrade. Unfortunately it appears doing this on an active router does NOT work so the router died and a replacement ordered.
With the new router the firmware was upgraded in isolation and this seemed to work. Now, with the firmware upgraded, the Services and Rules (NAT) pages worked and so the router does it's job.
Seems ok. Have not tested the VPN access yet.
FVG318 Review
operating system:Not ApplicableAfter the shock of this router being quite a bit larger than it looks in the images (Think an old, Full size VHS case!) I am now quite happy with it.
I bought 2 of these units and connecting them together via VPN was childs play using the built in VPN Wizard. This uses all the best security options, which is nice, and works a charm.
If you plan on using uPNP or a Syslog Server, give this a miss. Neither feature works properly, not even with the latest firmware and I have not had much help from Netgear either.
Speaking of Support, I suggest you call the 0870 number as the Internet support is terrible. Usual rightoff answers "Upgrade firmware to latest version" and "Factory Reset it and try again" are the best you get.
I have to say though, niggles aside, I am happy with the product and for a VPN Router, for the money you cannot buy cheaper with this level of security!
All I hope is that since it's a fairly new product, they will iron out the bugs and it will be a very good product.
Don't buy this if you want PPTP passthru from the Internet to the LAN!
operating system:Not ApplicableHaving initially been quite impressed with the router, it has a complete showstopper which is not evident from reading the documentation, and was only found by experience.
If you have a Windows Server (e.g. SBS2003) on the LAN and you want to use Windows VPN from outside to connect to the server and LAN, you can't! Although it says it offers PPTP passthrough, it doesn't. PPTP requires GRE (IP protocol 47) to be passed through, and this router does not do that.
Netgear support say it is a known issue that has been passed to their escalation team with no ETA available. I guess that means "go away and shut up" :-(
So now I have to look for another router that allows per-IP inbound access control and that does pass GRE through properly. Any suggestions? This one will be getting returned provided eBuyer will accept it back.
Not suitable for high speed broadband
operating system:Not ApplicableThroughput maxes out at 13MBps even without VPN tunnelling turned on /any active VPN connections - so this product isn't suitable for anyone using the current crop of FTTC connections or achieving the top end speeds of a 24MBps ADSL 2+ connection (i.e. most SME's, I'd have thought).
