Five unmissable events in 2017

It’s that time again, Christmas and New Year is over. It’s time to ditch the mulled wine and mince pies and get back to the daily grind. But it’s not all doom and gloom this January, there are plenty of awesome events to look forward to this year.

2017 is set to be a great year for gaming events, comic festivals and tech shows. We’ve put together a list of our favourite events to get in your calendar, and why they shouldn’t be missed!

PAX South// 27 – 29 January

PAX south is held in sunny San Antonio, Texas. In a nutshell it’s an all-American celebration of all things gaming. There seems to be something for everyone, from table top gaming tournaments, to a handheld games console lounge to a suite dedicated to the best gaming computers. There will also be panel-style Q&A sessions with some of the most talented game developers of the era. To top it all off there’ll be several ‘nerdcore’ concerts to rock out at throughout the festivities.

You can register for tickets now online, and buy for as little as $75 for the whole weekend. You might even spot us there, covering all the excitement on our social feeds.LAN Hall at PAX East

Gadget Show Live// 7 – 12 April

The Gadget Show is any tech-lover’s dream. It showcases all the latest and greatest technological innovations from some of the biggest companies out there. Last year we saw VR take centre stage with demos available to try at several stands. As one of the latest gaming crazes to sweep the gaming world, we’re hoping for even more immersive games to try this year. We also saw smart home technology with everything from smart alarms to fully automated systems. Alongside interesting guest speakers and exhibitions featuring the latest tech and innovations.

This year it’s being held, as always, at Birmingham NEC. Tickets aren’t on sale yet, but keep your eyes on the social feeds for more information closer to the eventGadget Show Live Image

Insomnia 60// 14 – 17 April

Hailed as one of the UK’s biggest gaming festivals, Insomnia 60 is the next event in an amazing line-up dating back to 1999. The ultimate destination for die hard gamers, from WOW to Minecraft experts, there’ll be an incredible roster of special guests. You’ll also enjoy LAN gaming areas, Q&A sessions, eSport tournaments and much more to geek out to.

One of our favourite festivals of the year, we attended the last two Insomnia events in Birmingham’s NEC. You can check out our interviews with some influential gamers on our Twitter feed. Easter weekend isn’t far away, so be sure to book your tickets on the Insomnia website soon: https://insomniagamingfestival.com/ . We’ll see you there! Game Hall Insomnia I57

Comic Con// 26 – 28 May

Undoubtedly one of the most well-known festivals for not just retro and modern gamers, but comic book fans and sci-fi lovers alike. It’s full of great events and guest speakers this year, including Summer Glau from Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Doll House and Firefly. There’s also Cosplay and Masquerade, eSports and video game tournaments. And be sure to check out exhibitions and talks from the brightest comic writers and creators.

With over 130,000 visitors to London Excel last year, it’s a hugely popular event. But although London is in our opinion the one to visit, the festival is touring the UK so you’re sure to find one close to you.
