Elpida Memory has marked its entry into the Graphics Double Data Rate (GDDR) market with its memory device that operates at six gigabits per second.
It has completed the development of the 1-gigabit GDDR5 and said sample shipments will begin in December, followed by mass production scheduled for the second quarter of next year.
The new product was developed in just three months using GDDR design assets acquired from Qimonda.
Graphic processing equipment such as game consoles and PC graphics cards use applications for GDDR memory devices used with GPU, along with equipment that require high-performance computing used in areas such as science and technology, physical simulation, digital image processing and video conversion, Elpida said.
The firm announced its decision to enter the graphics DRAM business in August following the Qimonda deal.
Close co-operation between Elpida's new design centre in Munich, an Elpida Japan-based technology team and engineers at Taiwan-based Winbond Electronics made the quick development of the new product possible, the firm said.
