Five HD to launch in July

A high-definition (HD) version of Five is to make its debut this July.

The channel, which currently broadcasts popular programmes such as FlashForward, Neighbours and Home & Away, is teaming up with Sky to make HD available to viewers.

Five HD will be accessible in homes equipped with Sky+HD systems. Around two million households are thought to use this system.

Director of strategy for Five, Charles Constable, said the channel's line-up was well suited to HD, given the range of series it currently airs.

Hilary Perchard, Sky director of product management, added: "With the best of free and pay TV now in HD, there's never been a better time to embrace [it]."

Currently, up to 37 HD channels can be accessed via Sky, such as FX, Discovery, MTV and ESPN.

Five also offers sister stations called Five USA and Fiver. The latter's schedule features sitcoms including 8 Simple Rules and Everybody Hates Chris.
