New research has shown more people will download apps to smartphones and tablet PCs over the next few years, as the revenue such programs generate rises.
A study published by Juniper Research notes that by 2016 worldwide revenues from consumer mobile apps will rise to some $52 billion (£32 billion), as adoption of these devices continues to gather pace.
While it is thought more than 31 billion apps were downloaded to mobile appliances last year, this will increase even further between now and 2016, with the introduction of operator billing in the Android Market and other app storefronts set to drive revenue forward.
The study also notes that while tablets currently account for seven per cent of current app revenues, it will hold a 25 per cent market share by 2016.
Last month, gadget expert Ella Williamson claimed that while there are currently around one million apps available in the UK, this number could double by the end of December 2012.
