Japanese video game developer and publisher Konami is thrilled after its improved Pro Evolution Soccer Series topped the all formats chart.
PES 2010 stood first on the ELSPA/GfK-ChartTrack rankings, beating Microsoft's Forza 3, EA's FIFA 10 and Sega's Mario And Sonic At The Olympic Winter Games.
The company has attributed the game's popularity to improvements made with feedback from fans, after the release of PES 2009.
Peter Stone, UK general manager of Konami, told MCV: "We are delighted to see PES 2010 top the chart against some incredibly strong competition."
He added: "With the likes of Forza 3 and WWE Smackdown released on the same day, it is great to see our revitalised and much improved crowd-pleaser emerge triumphant. PES is a key series for us, and we have high hopes for the coming year."
Data from GfK-ChartTrack shows that 66% of the game's overall unit sales in its opening weekend were on PlayStation 3, while Xbox 360 claimed 32%, and PC sales just 2%.
Konami previously said that it had shipped three million copies of the title to retail, with overall sales of the series standing at over 55.5 million units to date.
