Yakuza 3 for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) is "quite addictive", providing a multitude of different tasks to complete as well as emotional back story segments.
The game - set in the streets of Tokyo and Okinawa - sees you play Kazuma Kiryu, who must protect an orphanage from the local yakuza.
According to a review by technology website Hexus, it is a difficult title to explain, because it blends so many types of game play across more than 100 missions.
Battles, mini-games and typical role-playing quests mean it is very varied and endlessly entertaining, despite an initially slow pace.
Fights, once you have reached a certain level of ability, are visually stunning, Hexus added.
Over the top and often violent, the assault style is "incredibly satisfying" and worthy of its 18 certificate.
"It's a crazy game that oozes atmosphere from every corner ... the storyline requires a lot of patience, but there's depth there if you're willing to sit through the text," it concluded.
