Did the job, first time.
os:
Windows XPThis adapter came with a mini-CD with the driver installer app.
I got this adapter as my new PC did not have a serial port and I found I needed one for a GPS unit.
Loaded the driver and plugged in the adapter. It installed itself as COM3. Plugged my serial device into it and everything worked as normal first time.
The adapter has a female 9-pin socket, making it the same as a built-in serial port. So no gender-changer needed. It claims to be USB2 but in reality RS232 is never going to trouble even USB1.1 so it's not an issue.
FYI, it says it's rated at over 1Mbps and supports remote wake-up and power management.
All-in-all, it does what it says and without any fuss. Top marks.
Great worked straight away

Windows XPCame with a mini CD with drivers but during setup was informed that drivers were already installed on my XP laptop. Plugged in my Garmin etrex which was found on com port 5. Comes with a 9 way to 25 way adapter.
Works great.
Second time lucky...
Like one of the other reviews the first cable I received was based on the ArkMicroChips ark3116 chipset. Unfortunately the calbe didn't come with any drivers and is not supported by native Xp but I managed to find a driver for the cable but when I used this with my serial device it crashed the PC to the bsod. Shame on you Ebuyer for selling hardware with no drivers.
I've just received my second cable which is based on the Prolific PL2303X chipset and all works as designed. The new cable comes complete with a microCD with all of the drivers needed for most of the common os's including Windows, Macs and Linux.
Was delivered by 1st class post by Royal Mail using Ebuyers 5day economy postage.
question ?

can anyone help ?
my email is gurdep.r@btinternet.com
cheers

Installs as COM3 with default settings of 9600,8,1. You will want to go into Device Manager COM3 properties to set the speed to your requirements. Supports upto 128,000 bits-per-second.
Just the job
os:
Windows XPGreat bit of kit, don't be put off by it low price, the quality of this little wonder is spot on.
bought this divice out of desperation. Originaly I had bought an adaptor made by targus, to do the same job(at over twice the price of this one), it just refused to work.
Anyway, after loading up the driver on my PC, this one worked strait away, no problem whatsoever.
If you need an adaptor buy this one!
Windows XP driver
Mine came today with NO DRIVER disk at all (!)
Win XP didn't have a driver already.
Packaging said "HL USB-RS232 cable", no vendor information, "made in China".
The chipset inside is Ark Micro 3116.
Found the driver online at:
http://www.citronid.com/download/ark3116_Drive.rar
Device installed as COM5 and seems to work fine.
Hope that helps anyone else.
Aladin dive computer
I bought this to download my aladin dive computer to my new laptop which does not have a serial port. In vista, the device installs automatically without the CD. However my dive computer refuses to play ball. I am not sure whether it is the device or the dive computer.
USB to UArt adapter
No problems on linux. Driver is ark3116.
Hotplugging worked by default on my distribution.
idvendor:idproduct = 6547:0232.
As someone else has said, it appears to be ARkMicroChips 3116
works with an ASUS eeepc running Xandros Linux
os:
LinuxGot this today, installed gpsbabel, the adapter showed up as /dev/ttyUSB0. I sucessfully transferred data from my Garmin Etrex gps onto my laptop.
