great printer
os:
Windows XPI brought the HP 6940 because I wanted a printer that I could share on a wired family network on a budget. Well it turned up early, I plugged it in direct to the network switch/router (no usb) fitted the ink cartridges in with the paper loaded the software except for a problem with the auto registration (dont bother, go direct to www.hp.co.uk) works great loaded the software on the other computer job done. Then I placed a bluetooth adapter in the I had about, brilliant just send the photos from the mobile via bluetooth direct to the printer out it comes, proberly could get better results loading on the computer, messing with the settings then printing but who cares I prefer quick and simple.
find out the ip address of the printer from your router then you can access some settings on http://pinters ip address/ . I wish I had got one sooner rather than messing with my old slow printer with cranky software.
HP Deskjet 6940

Windows XPI bought two of these for the office as they were such good value. Unfortunately one came with a faulty power supply. I contacted ebuyer and they were really helpful and arranged collection of the faulty unit prior to despatching a replacement. Well done ebuyer, many thanks for such good customer service.
Aside from this, the Deskjet 6940 has a quality feel and finish about it, a rare thing in these throw away days. The print quality is excellent, very pleased. This is superb value for a network printer.
5 stars despite the faulty power supply.
wonderful printer

Windows XPGot this HP to replace my Epson. No more other brands...I think I've learned my lesson and will stick to HP printers from now on! :)
This printer looks beautiful and works wonderfully...relatively quiet too. One of the reasons that brought me to this one is the network connectivity. It works amazingly. No problems connecting up to my router. Installed the software and found the printer...my first print job worked without a hitch. There's Windows and Mac systems on my home network. Both work without a problem with the printer. The Mac's are wireless as well (connected to the printer via my wireless router).
One thing i wish was different about it is the colour cartridge isn't split up among the colours. They're all in one cartridge. I didn't actually realise this when looking on the site. Wasn't that clear.
It gets 4 stars only because of lack of clear detail about the cartridges. "Ink Palette (Colours): 4 or 6-ink" doesn't mean they're separate cartridges. The product itself is excellent build quality - works smoothly and quickly.
HP 6940

Windows XPBought this to replace an older model of Epson multi-function that we had hashed onto our home network.
Really simple and easy to use, had the thing up and running within about 10 minutes of getting it out of the box. I've got only very limited skills with networking, and I was very glad to find the CD-Rom guided me through the networking set-up of this machine, first on one laptop, and then on the next.
Also used the picti-bridge set up with my digi camera, again simple and easy to use.
Simple easy to use, and looks good too.
good printer

Windows XPI bought one of these printers to replace an HP 5650. The 5650 caused me lots of problems and even HP said they had a lot of problems with it. I have always used HP so did not want to move away from them. Well the 6940 is very good and I am very pleased.
Excellent SOHO network printer
os:
Windows XPVery versatile home/small office printer. Running on a small home network it's fast at day to day document printing but also produces excellent photo results with the photo cartridge installed.
Bad point: relatively small 3 colour cartridges instead of separate colours.
Good point: usual HP quality build and output.
Disappointing printer
os:
Windows XPWe bought this printer when our previous printer (also an HP) died. Its predecessor had given reliable service for 9 years before it finally gave up. We chose the Deskjet 6940 because it appeared to be a good buy. How wrong we were. Apart from not being able to network the printer, we were initially quite pleased with it. One irritating feature was its inability to recognise green paper. Because it has a red sensor light, it cannot see green, so assumes that there is no paper in the tray and refuses to print. The first major problem came when we changed one of the cartridges (the second time). We always use original HP cartridges, never 'compatibles'. The printer refused to recognise the replacement cartridge. We tried cleaning the contacts as instructed, but this didn't help, and in the end contacted HP who asked us to return the printer. It (or a replacement) was returned to us shortly afterwards and seemed to work ok for several months, but soon started to give problems, refusing to reliably feed paper, pulling multiple sheets through, frequent paper misfeeds, etc. It has now got to the stage where each page has to be manually fed. We will not be buying another HP after this fiasco.
