Great card, once you know a few things.........
os:
Windows XPThis is a great card, but Hauppauge want stringing up for the bad quality of their instructions.
To record one program and watch another, launch the Scheduler program, fill in the form to program a timed recording, and select `Background Recording`. This will then set the
background task for the recording. Once you are happy, simply launch a WinTV2000 session, and watch the other program of your choice. Simple when you`re told how. Also, if you put the machine into Hibernate mode after programming a timed recording, the software will wake up your machine, record the program, and then put it back to sleep, great.
Also, when the card has captured the .mpg file to your hard drive, the best and quickest way
to get it onto a DVD is to use `VideoReDo`, and perform a `Quickstream Fix` on the original file. This will make the .mpg file into a DVD-Compliant stream, and will not need re-encoding by Nero when you want to put it onto DVD. You can then also use `VideoReDo` to strip out commercials etc, it`s very easy and quick to use. Once you`re happy with the file, simply throw it at Nero to make it into a DVD Movie.
A two hour film will take less than 15 mins to put onto a DVD-R using the above process. Also, I tried many other methods to get the file onto a DVD Movie, and most other methods ended up with lip-sync issues on the DVD. The method above will work great, with no lip-sync issues.
Hope this helps someone, and hopefully save some people some time getting the best out of this card.
Cheers,
Martin
A 3.3v PCIX DVB-T tuner?! No... two of them!
os:
LinuxI bought this for several reasons:
- I'd heard Hauppauge are good
- I needed a 3.3v PCI card for a PCIX slot
- I needed a Linux-compatible DVB-T tuner
- Two tuners in one!
- Called eBuyer and their stock doesn't seem to have the (non-Linux-compatible) Nova-TD (diversity) version.
Received the product and tried to plug it into my Compaq DL380 G2 (rack mount server machine, quite powerful). As mentioned, this card needed to go into a PCIX slot which is strictly 3.3v only (PCI can be 3.3v or 5v, there is a notch in the connectors which 3.3v has, where 5v cards have a contact so they don't fit). I had to unscrew the front metal shield so that it would fit into the slot (design fault?) so the card doesn't "lock" into place, but it certainly works!
This Compaq DL380 G2 serves as my MythTV backend and the Hauppauge Nova-T 500 gives it a good run. Locking onto channels is VERY fast. Signal sensitivity is great: I have an indoor antenna which picks up every single channel, aside from a few dropouts every now and then (very watchable). Stability is great too, I've not experienced it crash in a whole week that I've been using it.
I can compare this to a Leadtek USB DVB-T stick which I used on my combined backend-frontend laptop which sits in my living room (rack server is under the stairs). The Leadtek stick would only lock onto a few channels with unwatchable dropouts with the indoor aerial and it would frequently crash mythbackend.
With regards to signal, though, I am quite close to the quite powerful Crystal Palace transmitter. I have a loft aerial which gets crystal clear signal with both the Hauppage PCI card and the Leadtek USB stick.
The fact that this tuner actually has two tuners was indeed a bonus.
Regarding the remote, it comes with a small IR receiver which plugs in via 2.5mm TRS jack (same as for iPod, I think) to the card. I've not used this because the card is in the backend machine and would be useless :) However, I did try wiring it to the frontend's microphone input and using lirc's audio-alsa without success. On this note I've bought (via recommendation from a fellow MythTV enthusiast) another remote+receiver: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/129977 ...await a mythtv-related review of that shortly.
A great product, very pleased. I'd recommend this to anyone whether for Linux or Windows.
Flawless with Vista Media Centre
os:
Windows VistaI left this inside my machine when I did a clean install of Windows Vista and it installed itself and now works absolutely flawlessly in through the Media Centre in Vista. I previously used the MediaPortal software (free!) but it still has a few bugs especially with the program guide not being user friendly for my mum and dad to use without me around! In Media Centre its all really easy and automatic and it all ties in perfectly. If you're planning on making a home media pc, use this card with a version of windows that contains Media Centre, it has so many cool features. Remote works really well too - I've not had to install any of the horrible hauppauge software that comes with it.
Ditch the software, and this is great.

Windows XPI`ve been using this card for over 4 months now, and just want to let everyone know that it`s a great card, but you just have to forget about using the Hauppauge front end to use it day to day.
For anyone that is having problems getting this card to work in a half decent PVR way, then go and download GBPVR, install a good Cyberlink MUX, and start using the card the way it was designed to be used.

Hauppauge want stringing up for the way they keep expecting the buying public to put up with such a clumsy and buggy front end, that ends up making a great bit of kit look like something from 5 years ago.
Install GBPVR, read up on how to get the best out of it, and you`ll not regret getting this card. Don`t let any reviews that slate the clunky Hauppauge software put you off, it`s a great bit of kit with the right software.

This is a cracker - records two digital progams at once - how useful is that!
os:
Windows XPBought one of these quite a few months ago and have really enjoyed using it. As mentioned elsewhere the software is a little rough and ready but it does the job - often better than the Windows Media Center 2005 Edition does (which has a habit of occasionally missing the start or end of a program). However, it works very well with the Windows MCE and I often use that as it does make recording two channels at the same time a little more 'automatic' and the TV listings with MCE is handy. The remote works fine with bundled software but not with MCE - though I understand it can - just haven't bothered to find out how.
To use the bundled software, first load the WinTV Scheduler, pick the station, type in the name of the program (purely for your reference), set start time and finish time (you have complete control over how many minutes early to start and late to finish) and then go. It's very obvious :-)
The only difficulty you might have is when trying to record to the second channel at the same time. The way to do this is to then load the WinTV2000 program, select the channel you want to record and then manually set it to start recording and set a time to stop - i.e. 1:30 mins or 2:00, 3:30 etc. I always set mine on Quick Record as the main record window does not open on my system (might just need reinstalling) however, this works very well.
Quality of recorded programs is EXCELLENT - can't tell the difference from a 'live' program.
I then use VideoReDo (absolutely excellent program for about £27 - I seem to remember - and very, very fast) to edit out the adverts, start and end rubbish, and the beauty of this program is that it handles the awful Microsoft DVR-MS files that MCE produces and converts them to standard mpeg files - which show on one of our DVD players (for the TV) but not the more modern Panasonic model (crippled on purpose?).
One odd thing about playing on our older (cheap) DVD player is that it will only play up to about 39 minutes and then locks up. My solution is to use VideoStudio8 to chop films etc to 35 minutes in length. The DVD then plays them perfectly with hardly any imperceptible pause between edits.
All round this card is an absolutely, thoroughly, brilliant piece of kit.
I did try a Terratech card first and spent months getting rubbish recordings and eventually sent it back for a full refund (not from EBuyer). This Hauppauge though is fantastic and not to be missed.
I hope this proves of some use to anyone considering buying this card.
Questions answered
This is a digital tuner you do not need a digibox for this to work.
The epg is internet based.
Yes this card will work with MCE, it is designed for MCE.
The card itself is low profile but the backplate is not, i think hauppage do a low profile backplate for this card but you will have to email them.
Try here for a keystroke file.

64 bit drivers are available !!
i dont know where David Robertson is looking, but 64 bit drivers for this card are in the latest downloadable drivers
http://www.hauppauge.co.uk/pages/support/support_new_xpvista.html
And it works great in 64bit..
Why do people think they can post anything without checking facts?
Fantastic product, amazing value!
os:
Windows VistaFirst of all, i would like to thank eBuyer for the almost instant delivery and great service.
Installation was very quick, easy and painless and without the need of any of the supplied CD's (avoided using them as i heard the software wasn't very good). Just visit their the Hauppage website, and download the most drivers, and you are away!
Double tuners makes it extremely useful for watching one program, whilst recording another on a different channel or twice at once.
Another great advantage of this product is the reception. I live in an area, where i was told i would get no reception at all, but in-fact i get nearly every free-view channel (with 70 in total).
Altogether, i think that this product is unbeatable in Media Center with it's stunning quality, and even with the great remote control! I would recommend to anyone out there, looking for a quality TV tuner for their PC.
5*!
This card is a "Low Profile" card
I`d just like to let the guy below know that yes, this is a Low Profile PCI card, so will fit
your computer.
