Interesting Licensing Issue
review by: David Walpolerating:

os: Windows XP

For those that want to do things properly, I have noted that Microsoft say "I'm afraid that unless you are a registered System Builder that the licence you have purchased is technically invalid. Microsoft do not offer any support with this licence - you must obtain support from your registered System Builder".

i.e if you purchase this OEM System Builder licence you WILL get windows updates and MS website WILL see you as 100% legit !BUT! you are technically running an illegal copy unless you purchased it "installed on a computer that you purchased from a registered System Builder"

Oh boy!! The law eh?!! Pah!

Hey, other than that - this is a brilliant package - get the remote to go with it - thanks Ebuyer - nice one!

Just installed this on my machine after deciding to hand some cash over to microsoft for the first time ever! What can you say, offers the full functionality of XP Pro with media centre if you want it, personally i dont really bother with it.

Nice and cheap....same will set you back £250 in PC World.

"WINDOWS DEGRADING ITS SELF"
review by: Anonymous os: Windows XP

Windows doesnt degrade it's self like one of the previous reviews stated, it is where the files get fragmented during the reading, copying and writing to system memory from the backing store when the operating system is booted up. When they are written back, the address where they were originally copied from is sometime overwritten by users data and is forced to take another location in the next avalible location.

MCE is Pro!
review by: Anonymous rating:

os: Windows XP

This Operating system is an extended version of XP Pro., so it's BETTER VALUE than Pro. It is more fussy with TV cards, but the benefits are noticeable.
You DON'T have to use it as anything other than Pro, especially since the 'MCE' bit is really designed for big screens and entertainment systems.
Whatever you do, DON'T instal SP2 (standard), it has its own version. The standard one will screw it up.
Very large on-line community supporting MCE - look for 'green Button'.

Oh, and BTW, any NEW XP install will run faster, because MS software degrades itself over time.

Note of thanks to 'Anonymous'
review by: Anonymous os: Windows XP

Bought this OS elsewhere and spent the best part of 2 days following Microsoft's so called instructions. Thankfully read this comment after trawling the net for a solution - and getting no where!

ASUS K8V-MX and WD2500KS ... Just Fine
review by: Anonymous rating:

Install problem down to having Linux installed on the WD drive. Removed all partitions and install was fine!

Media Centre is ok, but is fussy about playing DVDs, PowerDVD plays everything.

Does seem to be a cheap way of getting XP Pro.

Install hangs with ASUS K8V-MX S754 and WD2500KS

I had to install a parallel IDE drive for the installation to work.

The WD drive is currently disconnected and hopefully the install will still work with the parallel drive AND the WD drive.

A bit strange ...
