Seagate Cuda 230Gb SATA II 7200.10

I bought one of these to replace a Maxtor 120Gb drive because I needed the space and I wanted a faster transfer rate without going for RAID or a Raptor. I was looking for the best performance along with the best value for money per Gb.

I’m stoked with this piece of kit. Couldn’t recommend it more.

The table below is a comparison between my old Maxtor and the new Seagate drive.

http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p183/Ashaman_Jay/HDComparison.jpg

On average it’s 17MB/s faster than the old drive which is quite a bit considering both of them are on SATA 1.5. It can run on SATA 3.0 but my chipset (standard Nforce 4) doesn’t support it. There’s a jumper on the back that has to be set to force it to the lower SATA level.

The drive is also quieter than my Maxtor and doesn’t get as hot, Heat was something I’ve heard people complain about with this drive, no problem in my rig which is well vented.

I used Seagate’s DiscWizard to format the drive and then copy all files to my new drive. It took a while (100Gb) but it would have taken a helluva lot longer to reinstall everything. It worked perfect and booted first time. Available as a free download from via Seagates home page.

In a while I’ll probably buy another one of these drives and RAID them. At the moment it runs fast enough :)

I suggest that people take negative newegg reviews with a large pinch of salt.
Someone who considers themselves to have a somewhat high Tech Level on newegg couldn’t even format it and so gave it a 1 out of 5. Fewl…

A quiet and fast drive representing good value for money. Although my first hard drive only lasted a week before catastrophic hard drive failure i still give it five out of five. Am in the process of RMAing it but im sure this is a one off - well i hope so!!

My version of XP is recent enough to have had sata drivers built into it, which made my installation even easier!

One tip that might help the uninitiated: For people who have full Sata 2 compatibility on their motherboard; remove the tiny jumper at the back of the hard drive to enable the data to flow at full sata 2 bandwidth.

good amount of space for the price. the 16mb cache makes it fast as hell when installing stuff.

does make some funny noises but that might just be this one.

In regards to the bit about designed for raid, i have miune standalone as a sata and it doesnt seem to be any problem. bios reconised it first time and it is wokring fine.

Good size/cost and really fast

Bought four of these and configured them in a RAID 0+1 array. The result is very fast (of course) and no issues with noise like some of the other reviewers.

Its quiet, its fast and its big - basically its excellent value for money. I did need to load the driver during windows setup (F6 to load third party raid driver), even though I am not using raid, however it is a simple and painless process and takes about 10 seconds to do. Might not need the driver under win xp, but it does under win2k (my o/s).
This is a great drive - buy it now :)

Excellent drive - no probs with XP

I installed one of these as my third hard drive (for audio storage actually). Since it was not my boot drive I did not have any driver issues during installation. I partitioned and formatted using the normal XP drive management facilities (right-click My Computer; then Manage; then Disk Management). The drive is fast, quiet, and pretty cool running with only moderate airflow.

In common with most SATA drives, it only has the SATA power connector, so if you are adding it to an older system you will need to buy a power cable adaptor as well as an SATA data cable.

To the reviewer who had problems (one star, and blamed XP) - this drive is fine with XP. If you updated BIOS and SATA drivers and it still did not work, either the drivers / bios are no good, or you have a mother board issue. XP has no trouble with this drive.

Note: If you have a SATA2 capable motherboard make sure you remove the jumper at the back of the drive to enable the 3gb transfer rate.
Faster than my older Seagates.
Have bought 2 and raid configured them as striped.
Flying along nicely :-)
These work fine with XP (re. previous comment by a customer)

Great HDD

Just got this today, so far I have found it loads faster than my other SATA HDD. Windows loads up faster. If your thinking of a cheapish SATA hard drive that performs, then your here.

The connections are no different, I thought they may of been with it being SATA II. Just there is no 4 pin power plug on this. But alot of newer PSU's do have the new plugs on now anyway.

Does make you wonder why people think this drive has problems. Well for me no issues whatsoever. Installed with no problems at all, in fact just as it should do, no messing with files etc. The drive is super quiet and running at 35C. Its actually sat right next to a Maxtor running at 34C. Could do with another 2 of these.
