SuSE Linux 10.2 supported
review by: David Yanrating:

I bought this after upgrading my motherboard to an Asus K8V-VM and found that the proprietary on-board graphics chipset K8M890 was not supported "out-of-the-box" by SuSE 10.2. After several unsuccessful attempts in trying to get it to work with the OpenChrome drivers, I gave up and decided to get a supported graphics card instead.

The GeForce 6200 chipset is very well supported and sax2 detected it immediately giving me the full capabilities of my monitor. The image I get is crystal clear, though slightly a bit on the bright side but I guess that's what the gamma, brightness and contrast controls are for...

I don't play games so I can't comment for the serious gamer but for plain vanilla graphics work, viewing video clips and pictures, this is just fine. No problems whatsoever and especially for around just £20, absolutely fantastic.

Note that it is a PCI-Express-16 card and you will need a PCI-Express-16 slot on your motherboard.

Have you ever wondered how the fan-less cards can really not overheat? I've never found one that didn't get too hot to touch except this one!

I'm not a gamer but I am obsessed with running an ultra quiet PC that is high performing (I currently run a 30% overclocked E6300 C2D). Touching the heat-sink after playing Doom for an hour or playing movies makes me wonder if the heat-sink is connected at all as it is at ambient temps! ;D

If you're not going to ask the world of your graphics card but play the odd game or run Audio Visual stuff, then this is a GREAT card for £20.

Ideal quiet card!

Remember to install all the latest driver from the internet to get the best from the card and also solve any problems you may have.
The card gave me 2.2 on the vista experience!

I bought this as a replacement for a Galaxy GF7300, which failed after less than a year because the cooling fan motor died. It's a huge improvement on my motherboard graphics, an Asus M2NPV-VM. I don't play complex games, but I need to be able to hop around magazine page layouts. This card hops with alacrity.

New Linux system build

This is installed in an Asus M2N-E SLI motherboard, running Kubuntu Gutsy.

The Kubuntu system settings application knows about the Samsung SyncMaster 204T monitor I bought here a couple of years ago, and has selections for both digital and analog connections.

I've not tried anything smart like installing special drivers, so all I can say is that for me it "Just Works", and the noise from my system is so low it is almost inaudible.

No Vista support

Cheap graphics card with drivers for most O/S but none for Vista.

The Asus website showed drivers but they were poor. I used the NVidia website for the Vista drivers and Asus website for the Asus Utility software.

As I would expect, if you do use this card with Vista, expect a low performance rating. It was even lower than the motherboard Onboard graphics.

Go for a card with 128mb graphics.

Unfortunate DVI port!
review by: Will Hall os: Windows XP

Its a decent card but the only problem is that it has a DVI-D port as opposed to DVI-I

This means that the port is effectively useless if you want to stick an adapter and VGA in.

Adapters for this connection are not the usual small adapters, they are big mains-powered things so cost much more than the card!

Make sure you have a DVI-D cable before going ahead with this...see wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Visual_Interface

The person who wrote the following:

"In regard to the person that said this card gave them a 2.2 Vista Experience Rating... A new basic micro atx motherboard with onboard 6100 graphics generally provides 3.0 in my experience."

You are spot on, this card is worse than onboard graphics in most cases. I got 3.0 Vista Experience Rating with onboard graphics, 2.2 with this card and 3.5 with a HD 2400 Pro.

I took the card out!!

DVI-D, not DVI-I!
review by: Anonymous os: Not Applicable

The manual that comes with the card says that to use dual monitor support, you need a DVI-I to VGA adapter.

However, the socket on the card itself is a DVI-D socket so the adapter doesn't fit!
