Stunning

I have just spent my first day with this camera and now uploaded the images to my PC... the results are stunning. This unit has blown me away. The speed of focusing, the complete creative control, the ability to shoot RAW photos (so you dont get any loss of quality, unlike JPG which ruins all fine details).

The lens choice in this packages is excellent, 18mm at it's widest it very useful indeed, enabling me to get everything i want in to shot.

The battery has lasted all day and has only just gone down a notch.

The flash is extremely well balanced, unlike other cameras i've owned it doesnt over-power the picture and so your photo's retain the depth and dimension which natural shadows give (over powering flash flattens and ruins photos).

I can not rate this camera highly enough. If you have the cash, go buy one today!

After much deliberation I finally took the plunge to D-SLR photography and yes this camera is fantastic.

Much to much to say about the camera to review it properly, but then there are loads of reviews out there anyway.

One of the best I found which will tell you all you need to know (and a bit more besides) is at the following link.

Usual good service from Ebuyer.

A truely awesome piece of kit

I've had this camera for about a month now and all i can say is its amazing, the pictures it produces are awesome.

Its focusing AI is very good (it came off the Canon 30D i believe) and very quick. Even in JEPG mode it can produce decent photos but i would advise RAW shooting to get the full effect of the camera. The flash is very powerful but never seems to over power the photos. The modes to choose from are all useful if your wanting this as an expensive Point and Shoot camera, learning and getting into D-SLR photography or even a seasoned vetran.

There are a few things i'd say about it though, the EF-S 18-55mm lens it comes with feels cheap. its a good lens and a useful one don't get me wrong but it feels cheap the focusing action feels loose. The battery will give you a decent amount of photos but if you use the flash and spend alot of times focusing then don't expect much past 250 shots. The last thing is the downloading of photos, for some reason (possibly for the inclusion of the Pictbridge feature) Canon saw fit to not have the memory card directly accessible via USB cable (because of it only have WIA drivers i believe and all the photos having to be passed through the image proccessor). what this means is that whereas your CF card may be able to take 80Mb/s the camera will only allow you to download from it at about 10Mb/s. The final thing i'll say is that unless you are in a decent amount of sunlight, if you leave the camera to do exposure etc itself, it has a tendency to underexpose slightly.

all in all i would say thats the few problems it has are nothing compared to what you get, this is an epic piece of electronics and an excellent camera too.

one last thing, gets a decent CF card something from kingston or crucial, also when it says that the maximum burst shooting is 27 in JPEG ...well i've had it take in excess of 80 in JPEG (go figure!)

Great camera....but

This camera is a lovely piece of work. I needed a digicam urgently and bought it because I am already into Canons. My old lenses work quite well with this camera, but the 18-55S lens will NOT work on your non-digital EOS SLR. This was a minor disappointment, but of course I suppose I could have bought body-only. Having said that, the lens itself is superb and typically only adds about 10 quid to the price, so you might as well get it!

The camera is easily mastered even if you never used a Canon previously. Performance is superb. Even with a 300mm regular lens, the shots I produced on this put my analogue camera to shame!

The only real issue I have with the EOS 400D is that it is rather small and feels strange in my hands. I guess that's because I have been spoilt by my EOS 30 which is much larger, so I might have to upgrade to one of the bigger versions soon....

If you're a lady or a dude with smaller hands, my advice is - Just buy it!

However, I think ebuyer should perform a price review, as I was able to get this exact package for cheaper, even before the cashback offered by Canon!

Buy one.

I purchased an EOS 400D last week and I must say it is first class. I have added a 2Gb CF card and am now fixed up for 444 pictures in one hit. All my existing EOS SLR lens and flash gun fit without any problem.

Hope this helps.

Still happy after 6 months

As the 400D is aimed at the consumer market and will attract many first time SLR and DSLR users, it is worth making this general comment first: Any DSLR or SLR will only function as well as the user! Be willing to read up, try-out and learn. If you don't even know what DSLR stands for, or what aperture-priority means, get on Google or Wikipedia. Compared to compact cameras, your average-to-worst results are likely to be worse, initially, but your best pictures will be far better.

Until you are properly experienced, it's best to reserve judgement on a DSLR itself.

Anyway, as a user of SLR and then DSLR cameras for over 15 years, I can assure you that the 400D is a great piece of well-built, reliable technology, that can yield amazing results. The 18-55 kit lens has a fragile-feeling front element, and apparently not as good as the Nikon equivalents, but OK to start with. The body itself is good enough to warrant further spending on better lenses. Get the 50mm 1.8 prime for around 60GBP to see the optical difference from the kit lens and then save more for something like the 70-200mm f4 L or the 70-300 IS USM.

The successor, 450D has recently come out, but many think the price difference is not worth it. Those on a tight budget should probably still go for the 400D (with kit lens) and save any further money for extra lenses - which will make a bigger difference to your images than the modifications on the 450D, in my opinion.

Awesome
review by: RICHARD COWEN os: Not Applicable

This is indeed a worthy successor to the brilliant 350.
The various upgrades such as the larger screen are worth the extra.
It's very difficult to take a bad shot as exposure settings and focus adjust so rapidly even in difficult lighting and a fast moving subject.
Around 300 photos per charge should easily cover a days shooting and if you pair it with a Sigma 18mm-200mm lense, it's all the kit you need.

Haven't found any problems with it apart from trying to get it back off my daughter.

I love this camera

Wonderful camera i love mine but the build quality is a little suspect. Nothing alasrming or indfeed bad but if you are used to metal framed cameras or nikon alternatives this wont meet those standards. Image quality is amazing one of the best i have seen people say its uncomfortable but its light and small (which i love) and you can get a battery grip anyway so not an issue for those with big hands.

If you have a couple of extra hundred to spend i would get either this with a different lens or the 40d which in my opinion is one of the best non full frame camera out there.

Cash Back until end of December
review by: Anonymous os: Not Applicable

According to the Cash Back paperwork we received, and on the Canon web site, the 20th anniversary offer runs until the end of December, not October. Ebuyer, please double-check this!

The camera itself is if decent size, build quality is reasonable.

Focussing is fast enough for amateur use, but anyone who buys this will be wanting to ditch the kit lens.

To get the best results, you need to get some better glass for this.

If you are looking for something to take some decent quality snaps. Don't be fooled into buying an SLR thinking it will give you better quality photo's. it won't. If you do buy this, learn basic photgraphy skills and don't use automatic mode. It defies the point in having this camera.
