Belkin Wireless Print Server F1UP0002UK
review by: Anonymous rating:

os: Windows XP

I am writing this review based only on my experience installing this product.

I have a Belkin Wireless Modem/Router and a Canon IP4000 printer. My objective was to print wirelessly from the pc's/laptops in my house.

Objective achieved I have installed this print server and can print from all pc's on my network.

Further Comments:

The canon printer works particularly well in my opinion because of its ability to auto turn on and off. I know Epson don't tend to do this so they need to be manually turned on before trying to print anything. I don't know about any other makes.

My first attempt at installing the server I used DHCP to allocate an IP address but couldn't communicate with it wirelessly afterwards, this may not be the units fault and I may have done something wrong but my second attempt I manually allocated it an IP address on my network. My reason for doing this, rightly or wrongly, was because the DHCP tends to re-allocate IP addresses as pc's are turned off and on over a period of time and the pc is looking for a defined IP address to print. It worked for me anyway.

The next thing I did, again maybe unnecesarily but based on previous peoples problems I connected the printer whilst the server was still hard wired to the router and printed a test page. I then removed the network cable and wirelessly printed a test page. The biggest ball ache was moving the printer to the router to do this and like I say it may not have been necessary.

The printer/server were then unplugged and returned to the printers original location and printing was still possible.

The instructions supplied are ok for the bits they tell you about but in my opinion they lack in what the don't tell you. They don't make it clear enough what to do when the print server is installed and you want to connect your printer. I guess this is probably because printers are different and what works for one may not work for another.

The print manager is a bit of a strange one too. Once you have connected your printer the instructions tell you to tick the box to release the printer after 5 mins. Thats great but there is another tab called Auto Connect List which when configured allows you to print 'normally' otherwise it is necessary to manually connect using the print manager each time you wish to print. It also disonnects the printer 30secs after it finishes printing. Which in my opinion is much better than 5 mins.

I have given this 5 stars because it does what I want it to do and it worked straight out of the box. I do think the installation instructions could be better and Belkin should have more info available on their website.

Review incomplete due to 500 word restriction! Hope it helps some of you.

Belkin Wireless Print Server 54mbps 802.11g

Reason to buy this was that it supported MFP, I have a HPofficejet 7110 AOI printer. I wanted to be able to share this printer with 2 desktops and 1 laptop, through a wireless router.

Out of the box and followed the simple power and ethernet connection to my router, setup as per the install disk for wireless. No problems at all.

Next was to add printer to the print server, followed the instruction under section 4.2, with my HP driver disk at the ready - installed the drivers and then reinstalled a second copy of the printer software that runs the printing, scanning faxing etc. No problems here.

Connected to the printer and did a test print - No probelm. Set a staic IP address in both the router and the print server.
Turned everything off and the on again to see if it worked. Well it nearly did - What I found was that it is best to add your printer once it has been recognised to the auto connect list and I also added it to the favourites just in case.
So now everytime I turn on the PC as long as nothing else is using the printer it auto detects and grabs it until the timeout.

All in all there are some querky little things you need to get used to, but nothing major. It does what it says on the tin. I can print and scan using the HP director software which is great.

Vista and XP

Not sure why it has low ratings. Setup is very simple, assuming your router has DHCP running. If not then a little networking knowledge is required, as with most network products. Works well on XP and Vista.

On All In One printers the software creates a virtual USB port and Print, Scan and card reader works. One small draw back, the belkin software can be set to stay connected to the Print Server, using this option will stop other PC's accessing the device, as it is already in use.

If you only want a standard printer connected then disable the belkin software and set the printer port to a standard TCP/IP port (using the Print Server address) and use RAW and then your printer is on the network.

A wonderful product and a great price. Normally I don't use Belkin Technology but this is one of thier better creations.

Epson CX3200

Got this up and running in no time with wired connection. Required one phone call to Belkin Help line (Get the geographical number from www.saynoto0870.com) Two minutes and the advice given did the trick.

Now printing, scanning and faxing without any wires. Good value considering prices of other manufacturers and the Belkin Lifetime warranty.

Works pretty well with my Epson D88
review by: Anonymous rating:

I now have two network desktops and two wireless laptops all able to print to my Epson D88, and they are able to report the ink levels correctly (so I know which ink cartridge to change when). The two desktops and one laptop are running XP and print via the USB port, the other laptop is running Vista and is currently printing via a RAW port. However, there is a pre-release USB port driver available from the Belkin web site for Vista. I have not tried it yet because I am not sure it will add much over what I have now, as the EPSON status monitor seems to be missing or disabled on Vista, so I would not be able to see the current ink levels anyway.

The print server is cabled to my router, so I have not had to worry about the wireless aspects.

Installed and working over LPR/LPD or RAW very quickly - about 30 minutes. However, it took about another hour or trial and error to get the USB port connection to work properly - no specific issues, just not very well documented - in particular it took a while to figure out auto-connect and the difference between the two disconnect timeouts. Just need to remember to manually disconnect after installing your printer before auto-connect mode will work correctly!

Even printing at 100mb/s over a cabled network is noticeably slower than on a real USB connection, especially on images - but still ok.

It is possible to force another computer to disconnect by right clicking on the print server manager in the system tray and then selecting disconnect - which causes any connected computer to disconnect.

Overall I am very pleased as it does everything I need it to do.

1 AIO, 1 Laptop, 1 Dongle = happy customer

The guy I sold this to was more than happy with it, and even installed it himself (despite my advice to the contrary). I never saw it in action, but my guess is that to wireless-enable a single AIO printer for a single PC/Laptop (which is what we wanted) then this is definitely the job for you.

4 Stars because it did what it said on the tin (after a slight hitch), but I haven't tried it on a network of PCs.

Not for the Novice

OS: Windows XP, Windows 2000
Printer: Epsom Stylus DX4000

It took me a couple of hours to set up, but I now have 2 laptops able to print and scan over the wireless LAN.
However not all without problems.
Is it me or does it seem that the general quality of Belkin driver software has deteriorated in the last couple of years?

Most importantly this device does not work in the same way as when you share a printer connected to a PC on your network,
but rather tries to emulate a sort of 'USB-over wireless' connection to the printer. This of course means that only one computer can be connected to the printer at any one time, which means you have to perform a sort of software USB connection before you print/scan. Belkin provide a little program 'all in one print manager' to do this, and it can be configured to connect automatically although it's not well documented. For this reason not really suitable for a multi user environment where you may have a lot of users trying to access the printer.

I found the 'all in one print manager' was horribly incompatible with Windows XP fast user switching and saw exactly the same errors messages as reported by Neil Venn.

The general installation was problematic too, fine on Windows 2000, but took several install attempts and removal of existing print drivers to install on XP.

The wireless configuration was straight forward and the connection seems sound.

Does what it says on the tin, but not recommended if you don't want have to be tinkering with it at install time or run time.

Works well for Multi Purpose printers but is not a general purpose printer server
review by: Anonymous rating:

os: Windows XP

The description dosn't really make it clear that this print server is specifically designed for multi purpose printers i.e. ones with a scanner. Normal wireless print servers are only ONE WAY and cannot be used for scanning. This one attempts to solve this problem - and it does work after a fashion. However because of this it will only connect with ONE computer at a time. It is supposed to kick in and connect when a print job is detected but it will not if another computer is already connected. The other computer has to be disconnected from it at that PC it cannot be done remotely from another PC (i.e. the one you are trying to print from.) The supplied software is very poor in this respect as you should be able to send a message to the PC connected asking them to disconnect.
Even if no other PC's are connected it still does not automatically connect to the one you are trying to print from - you have to go into the print server control panel to manually connect. However you can set the disconnection option to remain connected or disconnect after idle for a sspecified time.
HOWEVER, those limitations and frustrations apart it does work well for scanning from my Canon MP500 (and printing of course) but scanning is is a lot slower than using a direect USB connection.

This print server is fine if you NEED a wireless print server that is capable of acessing the scanner function on a multi purpose printer but for a general purpise wireless print server for printing ONLY look elsewhere, as this is intended specifically for MP printers.
One other annoying feature is that even if you have a print driver set up it always sets up a 2nd copy and you have to remember to specify this one when re-connecting.
These frustrations and limitations apart it does actually do what it sets out to do i.e. enables scanning from a MP printer using a wireless connection as well as printing.

BEWARE: CHECK COMPATIBILITY WITH BELKIN
review by: Neil Vennrating:

I bought this because of the claims of working with multifunction printers - it doesn't work reliably with my Epson RX500 however.

The installation was fairly easy and I had it working from one account on one machine reasonably quickly. It actually took two goes at installing the software and I don't know what went wrong really the first time. But if I log into another account on teh same machine the management software tries to start again and that seems to cuase some sort of collision and you get warning messages that may be meaningful to the developers but are not at all useful to users. Oh, and you get 4 messages that appear around a second or two after each other - I can only guess it's retrying a few times before giving up.

Installation onto a second system was similar, but operation was worse - there were now problems because the different systems were not cooperating. I thought that it might be Epson Status Monitor interfering, but even turning this off didn't help. I got around this a little by using the "LRP" capability but that is only for printing which defeats the purpose of a multifunction print server!

I have returned my device and will be looking elsewhere - but I don't hold out much hope because even the Linksys product is not tested with my printer.

Email or call Belkin suport before buying this product because the compatibility list is not linked from the website.

Three stars for effort.
