Excellent piece of kit
Brought this to replace an aging Garmin Navtalk, and cant fault it. Havent used other brands so cant compare to, say, Tom Tom but there isnt anything missing from this product. Its definately worth paying extra for the bigger screen on the 600 series, and the traffic updates are also worth getting - and you dont pay a subscription. The ability to redirect to avoid a jam has saved my bacon twice recently.
Has never lost the signal like the Navtalk did and the camera alerts seem accurate.
Lots of "extras" - like the bluetooth and the travel guides but doubt I will ever use them. Otherwise its well recommended.

Windows XPThis is a very good device. The touch screen interface is very easy to use, bluetooth connectivity is brilliant with Sony Ericsson phone and makes using the phone whilst driving a cinch. Haven't had a chance to use the traffic alerts yet but the screen resolution is excellent even in bright sunlit conditions. I highly recommend this product if you do not need European maps and want a widescreen GPS.
Wonderful Little Machine
os:
Windows XPGot this as a birthday present, and chose firstly GARMIN and then this particular model, after a bit of research. I can honestly say that this is a fantastic little machine. It works straight out of the box. It found the satellites in seconds and the screen/maps are very clear.
The menus are easy to navigate; you can add up to 500 favorite locations. When you are being given directions, they are clear, and give you plenty of time to react.
There are loads of points of interests for wherever you happen to be, i.e. Banks, shops, Hospitals, restaurants etc. and when you hook up your phone with the bluetooth connection, you then can even call them. The hands free part that comes with this unit is excellent. I've used hands free kits before where you were better off shouting! The mic picks you up, even when you are in the passenger seat, and I have the unit attached to the screen on the far right hand side.
For the money, this is a real steal!! You don't have to pay for speed camera alerts updates, you don't have to pay for traffic alerts and the maps are always up to date.
Having used this for a week or 2 now, the following are only the "slight" niggles I have with this machine. Firstly - when you're charging it via your PC or USB charger, the screen shows you a pic of a PC - so you have NO idea when it is charged or how long it's going to take to charge. You're always told to fully charge things before disconnection, and it's a bit of a guess when it comes to this! I just leave mine overnight and it seems to be fully charged in the morning. I bought a USB charging adaptor, which goes straight into the wall, saves you having to leave it on your computer all the time. You can get it from here, about 2 quid! The other slight niggle I have, is that to receive the traffic updates, you HAVE to have the traffic receiver cable connected which also includes the charger part as well (bit of a cable nightmare) so it kind of defeats the purpose of charging the unit (so you don't have to have cables showing) if you have to have the charger on to get the traffic updates!
AS for battery life, I had mine on with screen backlight on all the time and it lasted for 3 hours. If you change the setting, so that the back light only comes on when you're being given instruction or making turns, then the battery will last for ages, I think it says up to 7 hours!
Honestly though, these are only wee niggles, I whole heartedly would recommend this unit to anyway, I am WELL impressed at what it can do.
Garmin Nuvi 610T

Not ApplicableHave had the pleasure and pain of using Navmans, Garmins, Snooper and TomTom and to be honest they are much of a muchness. The Garmin Nuvi 610T is latest in a long line of SatNavs I have worked through and the 610T been pretty damn good so far. Bought from Pentagon GPS (www.pentagongps.co.uk) as they have the very latest units with v10 2008 mapping, and its cheaper. It uses Navteq mapping which is generally regarded as a little more accurate but its still no substitute for common sense. In practice, I am very pleased. 1) The screen is large, wide and very bright, no glare or reflection and doesnt seem susceptible to mucky finger printers. 2) The windscreen sucker actually works well and stays put over the bumpy bits. 3) It is very easy to use with numerous ways to search for an address (street name, postcode search, map browsing etc). 3) There are lots of useful points of interest to ensure your well catered for petrol stations, food, accommodation, attractions etc when you arrive. 4) The TMC traffic alerts work well, giving you plenty of warning of major bugger ups up the road and guiding you around from miserable delays. 5) The Bluetooth works brilliantly (I use a Samsung SGH-P310 mobile) to make and receive calls via the SatNav. The built in speaker and microphone work well even from the passenger side (no yelling required) and the SatNav automatically synchronised with your mobile phones contacts and can also display text messages etc. It can also dial numbers for your saved favourites and the already pretty extensive built in list of points of interest, so you can for example, easily select a hotel if you are running late and call ahead hands free to reserve a room and book a restaurant table. 6) You can download or add your own points of interest, eg speed camera alerts (try www.pocketgpsworld.com) when hooked to a PC (use the Garmin POI Loaded). 7) Directions are clear, well marked and accurate with fast rerouting. 8) There is a very funky trip computer built in. 9) Other gadgets include calculator, MP3 player etc. 10) Mapping is easily updated or expanded via SD card slot but it does cost. Only notable downsides appear to be the cabling. The TMC traffic cable is combined into the car fag charger cable making for a rather clumsy sprawl of cabling. I would suggest finding a way to very discreetly fix the cabling in place permanently so you can come and go with no more agro than just having to stick the SatNav in the window. Also having a bigger widescreen means battery life is more limited than a smaller screened unit (3 hours off the charger so far) which is not a particular concern anyway really and it takes a long time to charge. So far very pleased. Great. Err, recommended.
Accurate
os:
Windows XPFinally took the plunge now that these gadgets have evolved beyond the brick stage. Sleek and tidy, one of the cooler features is the Nuvi's accuracy. I've cross referenced with Google Earth and OS maps and the altitude -when out in the car- is very good. Indoors it wobbles by upto +/- 10 meters and appears rather dependent on a good signal. Position and speed are accurate and seem less dependent on a strong signal. With EGNOS on I get typically 10-15 foot accuracy outdoors and 20-30 indoors. My one gripe is that you don't get trip logs. This is simply Garmin using it to sell a more expensive device (the 700 series). Maybe this will change one day - it's only dependent on the software. Big screen size is definitely worth it to save squinting. For some helpful screenshots visit http://www.anotherurl.com/library/garmin610.htm.
