PT1: Fantastic PhotoFrame but needs some time to crop pic to make full use!

Being someone who loves photographing, I've always wanted to get a digital photoframe, but the price and display quality has always put me off.
I was looking around for the cheapest option to display my favourite photos and I found one for £46 (for a 5.6" frame). During my searches I came across the ebuyer one for £45 (one without movie playback).
After some research I read some good and bad things about photoframes so I thought it was best I have a look for myself. I managed to see one of these Cibox frames on display in a shop cabinet prior to ordering mine from ebuyer.
Being sold on the quality, I finally ordered one a few weeks back when it was £55, the price then went down to £52.87 :( but for the money I paid it's a fantastic product. Currently, you can get this delivered for free using the 5 day super saver.

However, I must say the delivery service is misleading. I received this on the sixth working day and after contact with ebuyer (excellent enotes service - quick and courteous) I was informed that the first working day does not count thus I received this on the Monday rather than the Friday I was hoping. Regardless, I'll know for next time!

Anyway, onto the product! The frame actually looks smart and you get a choice of using one of three different bezels (White, Black or silver - they are all in the pack)
Personally I think this frame looks better than the non movie version with the curved clear perspex frame and some others that are around.

The important thing in this frame is the screen itself since it'll be displaying your photos. The screen is in widescreen format and since most cameras do not take pictures in this format you'll either need to crop your photos or use the 4:3 mode. I tried out the 4:3 mode and pictures look weird and also don't make full use of the screen.
You can still display your pics without cropping them but the photos will look distorted with everything looking squashed! Hence, I'd recommend you take some time to crop your photos.
It is stated that the screen format is 16:9 but in actual fact I have found the screen ratio to be 16:10.
I experimented with various ratios and pitures and it's definitely 16:10.
I used a free picture program (mentioned below) called Irfanview (www.irfanview.com). You can open your photos onto the screen then all you need to do is drag a box around the picture area you'd like to 'crop'.

The formula I used is (in pixels),

If you know the width:

width of picture x 0.625 = the height required

OR

If you know the height:

height of picture x 1.6 = the width required

(continued from above)
For example, I am cropping a photo of 1600x1200. I'd like to keep the full width of the pic, thus I would multiply the 1600 by 0.625 which equals 1000. Thus I'd crop the photo to 1600x1000. This'll be perfect on screen.

As for the quality, due to the number of pixels you're going to notice the quality is nowhere near your monitor initially. However, at a distance of 2ft or more, the photos look very good and like a real photo frame. Colours are vivid and contrast seems great. By the way, there doesn't seem to be any options to alter these anywhere.
I compared some pics on the frame side by side to my trinitron monitor and the quality seems very good and comparable considering the price of the unit.

As for the other features, I have to say the sound quality was tererible from the movie I played. In addition, I managed to play a couple of movies in mp4 and/or avi format. I haven't fully explored this option but it definitely works. However, it wasn't my primary use but I might have a play around to see what the best options are.

One feature that's missing is the ability to play music with a photo slideshow or maybe I haven't quite found it yet.

Well, so far I'm happy with the purchase and at this price it's a fantastic bargain! Here's a quick summary:

GOOD:
+Quality frame
+3 bezels to choose and use
+Sturdy stand (for landscape or portrait use)
+Nice colours and contrast
+Decent selection of timings and transition effects
+Slim remote control
+Great price
+Large 7" screen (16:10 format though)
+Runs off mains
+Many features such as alarm function, calendar and clock albeit simple looking
+Supports SD,MMC,XD and MS cards and USB flash drives

BAD:
-Need to crop photos to make the most of the screen
-Does not support CF
-Placement of card/USB slot on top so can stick out (USB drive in particular)
-Navigation buttons has cheap clickity feel
-No sound on slideshow mode
-no volume control on movie playback (not explored movies much though)

If you're after a digital photoframe this is one amazing frame for the price and I'm sure it'll be cheaper in a few months time, but for £50 this is a great price. There might be other products with higher resolutions but they come with a higher price too. I personally don't think the price can be justified for those frames at present unless you have deep pockets!

For 50 quid you get a Digital photoframe with slideshows, MP3 Player, and Mini Film player, clock, alarm, calendar and remote control. Outstanding!! The screen quality is great, the interface is really easy to use, the remote is brilliant. Plug this into your stereo or surround sound cinema speakers and the audio output for music and video output is amazing. Don't be fooled by the claim that it plays MP4 video. It doesn't. I tried every conceiveable type of Video, and the only one it plays is AVI, which is ideal for me anyway. You may find the odd 1 or 2 AVI that doesnt work due to strange audio encoding, but most work perfectly. Convert your DVDs to Avi, bung them on a usb drive and you have a great little DVD player!! This product works so well and looks superb. Just buy one, you will not be disappointed.

Very fast delivery, excellent value, comparable to others at twice the price. I used 1gb SD card purchased at same time and Pocket Divx from(http://divx.ppccool.com/) to play videos. Sound a bit tinny but may be better wall mounted, still very impressed. Have not had time to check out all features, pictures do appear a little dark, will try Paint Shop or similar to lighten and see if there is any improvement. Some pictures seem a bit stretched but I simply chucked a few on the card to see how it worked. Have not tried the USB or remote yet.
Bought as a present.
Have now ordered a couple more for myself.
Free postage at moment!
As stated before first impression: excellent value for the price, remembering this is a digital photo frame.
Regards Paul

My family bought this for my mums birthday - given some shady reviews we werent expecting too much. However we are very impressed.

Functionality works as described. Frame shows JPEGs, AVI movies and MP3s. Instructions provided are good - to be honest the onscreen display is very user-friendly. We stuck in a memory card from a camera and were veiwing photos/movies in seconds.

Screen resolution is perfect - colours are vivid. Naturally the display is only as good as the original material, so make sure you photos and movies are rendered to high quality.

Remote works well.

Nice cheap frame does what it says eventually once you figure things out but hey thats all part of the fun. Took me over an hour just to set the date lol.

I downloaded and used this free program to convert my digital camera movie files plus wmv files and they all play fine on it now with audio.

http://www.download.com/Any-Video-Converter/3000-2194_4-10758758.html

Cropped pictures and now they are widescreen filling the frame without black edges

mp3 files play ok and option of pictures and music works too

Works with my 1gb sd card from argos just fine, but 2 cheap tevion 1gb sd cards i bought it will not read them. Says no readable files found even though i put the same files on it.

Fascias are plastic and they look just fine
Works ok with my 1gb flash memory stick too
All in all excellent product for the price

Fantastic delivery from E Buyer
review by: Anonymous os: Windows XP

We ordered this frame as a Cristmas present for my husbands son after being let down by another seller at the last minute. E Buyer delivered in superfast time as requested.
I can't comment on setting up the frame as we left that to my husbands son. He is delighted with the result.

A big thank-you to E Buyer for fantastic service and a bargain price as well!

Video format for the movies
review by: Anonymous os: Not Applicable

A friend had just purchased this and told me it had video capability. I generally play movies on my pocket pc on the way to work. I use Pocket DIVX converter a free download on
http://divx.ppccool.com/

This item played the movie i had on my SD card just fine, however it was set up to maximise the screen on my Pocket pc so it was sideways and didn't utilise the whole screen.

I am confident that after a little tweaking with the excellent management system on the encoder you will be able to produce full screen movies. (PS use the setting for the pocket pc on the encoder it will encode to many device types but this one definately worked)

I must also add the quality of picture was great and it was utterly smooth. this appeared a top notch product for the modest price.
