Overview
Product Description
Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007 is the essential software suite for home computer users and includes 2007 versions of Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and OneNote. This system enables you to quickly and easily create great-looking documents, spreadsheets, and presentations, and organize your notes and information in one place, making it easier and more enjoyable for you to get things done. This updated version features a new streamlined user interface that exposes commonly used commands, enhanced graphics, and formatting capabilities that let you create high-quality documents, plus a powerful note and information organization tool, and more reliability and security with the document inspector tool and improved automatic document recovery. With these enhancements, Home and Student 2007 makes it a pleasure to complete schoolwork and other tasks at home.Create High-Quality Documents
Home and Student 2007 gives you access to updated graphics, formatting galleries, and an intuitive user interface that exposes commonly used commands. These features enable you to easily produce high-quality documents that will make you proud. Improved picture, charting, and graphics tools help you produce better-looking documents, spreadsheets, and presentations more quickly, while a large library of standard charts, quick formatting tools, and SmartArt diagrams make it easy to include rich and stunning visuals and charts. The results-oriented user interface makes it easier for you to find and use product features so you can enhance your documents according to your specifications. More stable bullets and numbers, SmartArt diagrams, and graphics and charting galleries provide you with a wealth of other formatting choices. Meanwhile, document themes help ensure a consistent appearance among the documents you create in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, to make working across the programs you use most more convenient. PowerPoint also features context-sensitive tabs and easy-to-use galleries that make it simple for you to include tables and other graphics in your documents.
Enhanced Reliability and Security Features
With an improved automatic Document Recovery tool and the new Document Inspector tool for removing personally identifiable information from your documents, Home and Student 2007 helps you work with more confidence and security. Thanks to these two features, you'll never have to worry about losing documents after a system failure or exposing your personal identification information or unwanted comments to others before sharing your documents.
User-Friendly Operation
Packed with innovative features and improvements, Home and Student 2007 has a streamlined interface and an enhanced Help system, including online tutorials with step-by-step instructions, so you can quickly learn the product and find the answers to your questions. In addition, command tabs on the results-oriented Ribbon reveal commonly used commands that previously appeared only in lengthy drop-down menus. The Help system also offers a smooth transition between the Help menu in the Microsoft Office system and Help on the Internet (when connected). Larger, more informative ScreenTips provide help concerning commands, and the command tabs themselves are context-sensitive, changing automatically depending upon the task that you are trying to complete, so you won't waste time figuring out the appropriate command. When you need more guidance, online tutorials provide step-by-step instructions for common tasks.
Organize Notes and Information
Home and Student 2007 includes OneNote, a digital notebook that helps you gather, organize, and search many types of information in one place. This means you can consolidate typed text, images, audio and video recordings, digital handwritten notes, Web clippings, and more on the same page. OneNote also provides flexible note-taking tools to help you organize information the way you want. Categorize important projects or information in a way that makes sense to you, using an easy-to-use layout of notebooks, sections, and pages. Type or organize content anywhere on the page and track important items with customisable note tags. To help keep you on track, the powerful Instant Search feature helps you to find information you are looking for quickly. With it you can even search handwritten notes, the text in images and scanned documents, and spoken words in audio recordings.
Preview Changes and Spot Trends
Home and Student 2007 saves you time by making it easier to format your Office documents with Live Preview. This tool lets you quickly preview proposed changes to your document while you're working on it without having to repeatedly search through layers of menus. Taking a look at your proposed formatting before committing to it lets you experiment without risk and can help minimize future edits. Excel features highly visual conditional formatting with new data bars, more colourful gradients, and icons that you can use to format data based on specific rules, so you can more easily identify key data trends, which can help you study and prepare written papers or reports.
Create and Save Custom Slide Layouts
PowerPoint lets you create presentations with ease using pre-built and user-defined custom slide layouts. With the custom layout feature you can quickly create the precise layout you envision without being bound by one of the prepackaged, standard layouts. You can then save your custom layout for use in future presentations.
Broader Distribution of Your Documents
Home and Student 2007's features aren't limited to the work you do at home; they extend to broader distribution of your documents and presentations. New support for Portable Document Format (PDF) and XML Paper Specification (XPS) file formats helps ensure increased distribution and sharing of your documents with users on any platform. This is particularly ideal for either sharing documents with friends and families, or for presenting information and assignments in a computer-integrated class.

Good product overall
operating system:
Windows Vista
The thing most likely to upset previous office's users is Outlook's omission. Not a great loss to me, but a terrible blow for many others.
I can only speculate on the reasons behind Microsoft's decision but I presume that the fact that Windows Vista incorporates as standard many of the core features of Outlook (Windows Mail, Windows Address Book and the new Windows Calendar) has to do with it. So unless you're a hardcore outlook user, you shouldn't miss too much here.
But Microsoft compensate with the inclusion of OneNote, which could be described as an "information manager", a tool to quickly and efficiently gather together and organize information based on topic. I never used it before but I must confess I've fallen in love with it despite the fact that the interface hasn't been "ribbonized" as in the case of Word, Excel and Powerpoint. I certainly was expecting a bit more from Microsoft here.
To be honest, the cosmetics changes in the interface are for me the key decision to upgrade. The aesthetics of the product has been greatly enhanced to take advantage of the fact that monitor sizes are on the increase. Bear in mind however that this improvement has come at a cost of a quite high learning curve. Changing old habits may prove frustrating for some and although there is no change to the keyboard shortcuts there is no way around the ribbons that, unlike the bars, cannot be hidden or repositioned.
It's true that open source suites provide much of the functionality of Office for free. Individuals on a tight budget should give serious consideration to this option but if you're not in that category or you don't want to be looking at a n ugly and old-fashioned interface all the time, there's nothing that can beat this version of Office considering that you get three for the price of one.
Really good value - the best version
operating system:
Windows VistaThis is perhaps the best version of Office to date.
Top those that say Open Source software is better than this, get real - this slays them all; don't listen to them. How is something people give away for free going to be better than something that hundreds of professionals took years to make?!?! This software package is the best that money can buy, and at only £20 for each individual program, hardly breaks the bank. Also, don't forget that you can load it onto three computers, meaning the actual cost of each program is, what, £7! This works perfectly well with XP as well as Vista, and you can also keep previous versions of all your Office Products, 2003 Pro for example - or you could just replace the programs that you are upgrading, and keep the others.
Outlook has been replaced for OneNote, which as a student, I can say is infinitely more useful than Outlook (Just use Hotmail). The ribbon is really intuitive and you can still be backwards compatible with previous version of Office if you wish. The programs also look awesome with Aero, but are still good on XP.
A really great product, well done Microsoft.
office 07 - what a difference
operating system:
Windows VistaI would advise anyone to buy or upgrade to 07 - a lot easier to use, works well with vista, quite fast on my Acer aspire 5052 except for opening word. Apart from this excellent software, easy installation and clear user interface.
Good Value
Is licenced for 3 installations so approx 20 pounds per PC. Had to get it as my daughters teachers kept giving her work saved in 2007 which she could not open with office 2003, even though you can save files so that they can be opened in 2003 if you want to. Dont forget to go online and download SP1 for office 2007 its about 200mb & well worth getting, best to save the file to disk so you dont have to do it again for further installations. First class service for ebuyer as always, very fast delivery.
Excellent Software
operating system:
Windows VistaOffice finally gets a much needed makeover! I personally love the new GUI of the new Office. I can understand why it will be hard to get to grips with for 'veteran' office users but there will always be some disgruntled people with any change. However if you are happy with the 2003 version and only really use the basic functions of each program then I cannot say that this is an absiloutely essential upgrade.
It is terrific value as you can install this on up to three PCs which puts it at about 20.00 quid per install. Lots of features, more than you will probably ever need. I really like the templates you can get in Excel and the content you get from the web is very handy.
Looks great with Vista, fast and packed with features. Five stars.
Re: office 07 - what a difference
Anonymous: Word can get slow to open and it is due to the "normal.dot" file that Word uses. This should be about 35Kb, but I have seen it grow to 3Mb when Word has got a tad confused. It is generally located in "C:Documents and SettingsYOUR NAMEApplication DataMicrosoftTemplates". Just rename normal.dot to oldnormal.dot. When you next open Word, Word will recreate the file, and you should find it opens much faster. Let me know how it goes.
Office 2007
operating system:
Windows XPThis is excellent software and well worth the cash even when compared to openoffice which is free. Don't miss the fact that you get 3 licenses for the money.
office 2007 and office 2003
You can install Office 2007 alongside your existing Office 2003. They do sit together but not really recommended. Besides Office 2007 can save 2003 format documents anyway so no real need to have both on there anyway.
Compatibility with older software versions
For those who asked about compatability with older software versions:
While I was able to install both Word 2002 and Word 2007, I soon became aware that when I opened either it took an absolute AGE to open because Microsoft was trying to update 2002 to 2007, or merge the two or *something*. Anyway, bottom line is it became COMPLETELY unpractical with the speeds it was producing so I was forced to uninstall Word 2002.
I would recommend that anyone getting to grips with the new version go into 'Word Options' and change the default colour scheme from 'annoyingly distracting blue' to 'silver', which almost resembles old-school Word.
While I can't speak for the other Office products, I suspect it'll be a similar case.
Really Frustrating for existing users of Office
operating system:
Windows XPIf you have used MS Office 97/2003, and are reasonably proficient: it will take you forever to get to grips with this version.
It has a COMPLETELY re-organised menu system with a (pictorial) menu tab system instead. You cannot switch this off or go back to previous menus. It is utterly utterly frustrating and limited in many areas.
It has some bugs still (like it spell checks in Welsh by default) and installation of Office 2007 will wipe out spellcheck on Outlook Express (Microsoft's 'fix' is to suggest you buy one from another source!). If you want Office and are new to it- this is a good price. But if you are upgrading - forget it.
