Windows XPI am copying a lot of old video onto hard drives and backing up on DVD. Quite a chore. External USB drives are ideal because I’m not limited to what will fit into the PC. I can reduce wear on my drives by powering up only when needed – not every time the PC is on. Consequently I have several USB hard drives.
The Freecom drives certainly seem the best built I have seen. Each comes in a card box wrapped in thin plastic. The drive (wrapped in its own bag) is held in place about 1 cm away from the box sides, by two soft plastic supports so should be fine during transport. Also in the box is a 100-240 volt 47-63 Hz input, 12 volt 2 amp output power supply (with modest cable terminating in standard +ve centre connector). On the mains side is a small mains connector and separate cable. Approx 2.5 mm thick aluminium shell case surrounds four sides of the hard drive. The surface is a lovely satin finish. The dark plastic front is covered by a protective disposable slip and shows a blue 500GB light (when powered) that flashes as the disc is accessed. The similarly black back has a power-in socket, a USB socket (for the supplied cable) and on/off switch.
When I first powered up I was a little concerned – the 500GB blue light lit, but there was no noise or vibration. However the drive quietly burst into life when I connected the USB. (This is different from the 400GB drives I bought a while ago have start their gentle hum immediately on powering up and before plugging the USB connector in). After a while the drive gets noticeably but not excessively warm. I’ve had no disc failures yet. A thoroughly recommended buy.
Perfect

Windows XPI love it when a bit of kit just works ... and this does. Just plug in and go. On any PC.
Nuff said.

Windows XPReceived this 2 days after ordering, thanks Ebuyer. You really get a lot of product here for £120. Massive 500GB storage, very quiet operation and also universal power adapter so it can be taken abroad, very handy. It is easy to install and is in use within seconds. On top of this it feels very good quality, is metal instead of the usual plastic and has a blue LED that lights up 500GB on the front- pointless but cool. I highly recommend this product

Windows XPCool drive, replaces a dated usb hard drive. Really nice looking, very fast, and very quiet. Unbelievable value for money - 23p per gigabyte!

Windows XPI’m very pleased with this product. It looks like it’s been built well and has a sleek look; solid metal casing, with a cool “500GB” blue light. It has a Samsung HD inside and ended up having a capacity of 465GB once plugged in. It’s worth getting USB2 if you’re planning on buying one, it does make transferring data a whole lot quicker! For the size and price it was worth the buy.
Fast and very reliable

Windows XPunbelievable value for money - I bought one of these 2 weeks ago, and it is so easy to use. Fantastic plug and play device, and really stylish - the drive has a blue capacity indicator which looks sweet against the shiny black facia.
I will be buying 6 more of these for the company as it seems to be very reliable and sturdy, and even no noise. Every now and again you have to strain to hear the Hard Drive mechanism whirring, but somehow this drive doesnt feature a fan - this being said it does keep surprisingly cool, cooler than an older USB drive I have with a noisy fan.
Nice work guys, keep up the speedy delivery
GO AND BUY THIS DRIVE IF YOU ARE AFTER A COST EFFECTIVE WAY OF ARCHIVING/BACKING UP DATA!!!

Windows XPConclusion - Fab product, back up your data now!
I have used external hard disks for a few years now, primarily buying caddies and slotting in spare hard disks I had lying around. This time around I could not match the price of this product.
The unit design oozes quality, it is fast on usb2, very nice design, quiet and has not suffered from excess heat,(as I have destroyed 2 disks in other manufacturers external caddies due to heat.)
After 5 days solid, tranferring data, it has remained comfortably cool.
A bouns was the supplied power adapter & leads.
The PSU being compact, and 2 plug leads are supplied, i) UK ii) US, allowing you take this abroad if required. The power leads to the PSU are small, approx45cm, so you are not bogged down with a sprawl of cable.
Overall, Simply the best external caddy I have seen and used.
At this price, Buy one now!

Windows XPI decided to buy one of these over the other 500GB drives on eBuyer, and am very pleased with my choice.
The drive is very smart looking (matches my shuttle perfectly) and feels strong and well built. There is a little blue '500GB' LED which lights up when you power the drive on (there is a power switch at the back so you can turn it off when you don't need it), and which flashes when the drive is being accessed.
Performance wise, the drive is detected by windows in less than 10seconds (probably quicker on a better PC than mine), and file transfers are fast and haven't crashed yet.
The drive is also silent, which is definately a bonus.
Couldn't get the bundled software to detect my drive, but you dont need to install this for windows to find the drive, so i just removed it.
Great drive at a great price

Windows XPPlugged into mains, and then hooked up to the PC in a USB/2 port, and the drive was detected straight away and worked fine from the off.
It's extremely quiet, allthough it can get hot if you are doing massive file transfers over a period of hours, but this had no effect on the drive, and it hasn't crashed yet.
I like the fact you can turn it off when not in use, and the drive seems very quick to access and transfer data.
Definitely worth the money!
