Preformatted FAT 32
This drive is preformatted in FAT 32 file system. in order to transfer files over 4gb to the external hard drive you will have to convert the file system to NTFS.
Excellent!

Windows 2000I purchased four of these hard disks and have been running them for about a week now. I'm extremely pleased with them.
- The build quality is excellent. It's sturdy and pleasing to the eye. There is a blue LED in the front of the drive that lights up when it has USB power and it gets brighter during disk activity. It's attractive but for me I think the LED is actually a bit too bright when I use them in a room with the lights off (a very minor complaint).
- The drive is quiet. I can't compare it to an xbox360 but I think its quiet enough for a lounge room setup. Comparable to my so called 'silent' power supply which is rated at less than 20db.
- The drive has an on/off power switch.
- The drive gets reasonably warm when its running. It would be nice if it was a bit cooler but its ok.
- Transfer speed over USB2 is very good. Can easy do 1GB per minute from drive to drive.
- The drive comes preformatted with FAT32.
- The drive comes with 4 rubber gromets attached so that its can be placed horizontally or you can you the plastic stand to place it upright.
- At £99.99 I think this is the best value you can get for price vs GB for an external drive at this time [Feb 2007].
Highly Recommended!!!!
All you should need to know...

Windows XPI purchased the Iomega 500GB external drive on Sunday 19th August for £58.44 plus vat, it came 4 days later on Thursday morning, within the 5 day period promised if you select free delivery.
Windows XP recognised it in seconds, plug and play.
First thing you must do is re-format to NTFS format, before you put any files onto it. This took 2 hours 10 minutes on my drive. Do re-format, go to My Computer, and right click on the "Iomega_HDD" drive to select Format. It can be done by quick format if you have no spare time, but full format also checks the integrity of the whole drive. I dont recommend you do anything else with the PC whilst it is formatting.
Sound level - I placed mine on the PC and cant hear any additional noise from the drive.
Heat - Someones review said the drive gets hot. Mine didnt after nearly 3 hours constant use - Id describe the heat as lukewarm.
Speed - this drive uses USB2 and managed the following when I tested it:
1.22GB in 67 secs
2.83GB in 2mins 28 secs
7.42GB in 6mins 28 secs
These were AVI digital video camera capture files, which need a good throughput rate to play. When playing back directly from the external drive this worked with no jumps, so Im hoping to be able to capture directly to the Iomega in future.
The box packaging states the drive cache is 8GB "or greater"
Size - as per an old style VHS cassette box. Appearance is good, with brushed metal surface, feels sturdy.
Size of drive storage - why does everyone keep going on about 465GB? Surely to write a review you must read them too! So, dont be a parrot. Hopefully everyone knows why (500 giga bytes is shown as 500,000,000,000 divided by 2 to the power 30, because computers deal in binary)
In summary - I got what I was hoping for. I promise to post a review if anything goes wrong.

Windows XPJus purchased one of these to free up space on my computer...
... well what cn i say? definatly worth the buy.
Transferred 10Gb in less than 20mins, very easy to setup and use.
Have formatted mine to NTFS (need to go to www.iomega.com to reformat back to FAT32).
Smaller than expected, lightweight and quiet. Metal casing seems sturdy, stand is plastic but does the job.
Highly Recommended at this price and quality!
Great Unit - Recommended
os:
Windows XPThis is a great external drive. In the past I've just bought external enclosures and stuck bare hard drives in them, but in my experience most enclosures are, in a word, rubbish.
Obviously as it's a single unit, this enclosure is designed for the specific hard drive it comes with and it shows. Solid construction, internal* power supply and reliable operation, even when transferring huge files (eg a 200gb backup file)
The enclosure gets warm, but that's GOOD, Hard Disks by nature of their operation get hot (air friction on the platters) and it shows the enclosure transmits that heat away from the drive without the need for a fan.
The enclosure also automatically shuts down the drive when the computer is switched off, which will significantly increase the lifespan of the bearings.
I've not noticed it spin down while the computer is on, but I've not generaly had it on when I'm not using it,
*It requires an external power connection, rather than USB, but it's just a 12v 'wall wart' that plugs directly in, no proprietary external lump.
Wow
That's all I can say about this bit of kit. I thought it a great price for the 500GB capacity so went for it. It simply plugged in and did exactly what it was supposed to. I was backing up files within seconds. The design is sleek and I like the fact that it stands up.

Windows XPFantastic looking, Silent, Fast and Slim.
Bargain

Windows XPThis is the cheapest 500GB external HD you will find around, and may remain so for a while. I bought this at 99.99 pounds before the price went up, and it is amazing, sleek in design as well as reliable.
Iomega 500GB External USB2.0 Hard Drive
os:
Windows XPI have had a few different external hard drives and I can honestly say that I was extremly suprised and pleased with my 500GB drive. It is small and slim, looks great with it's sleak silver design and Purple light indicating when on. It is also very quiet. This is the best value for Money drive out there at present in my opinion. Definitly worth the purchase 500GB @ £99.99 you can't go wrong.
Great drive

Max OSXGreat drive for the price - pretty quiet too (you can hear it but not enough to distract). And to answer the question about Linux yes it does work, also works on Mac OSX. Pretty much all external hard drives and USB sticks use the USB Mass Storage driver which has been included in the default linux kernel (and mac) for years.
