Well pleased

I bought this device for two purposes:
- just bought a new laptop, and wanted an easy way to copy all the programs + data from the old (almost dead) laptop by removing the old drive (only 10 Gbyte) and reading it directly
- I've got a spare 30 Gbyte drive and want to make use of it.

This device has satisfied both of these requirements and I'm very pleased considering the price is under B#7 inc VAT.

In the box you get:
- black aluminium caddy (empty of course!)
- USB cable with two connectors at one end, a single connector at the other
- 3" CD with Win98 drivers
- v. small cross-head screwdriver
- 2 v. small cross-head screws
- velvet carry bag with drawstring
- dodgy instructions in Chinese + pidgin English

The business end of the caddy has a USB port and a red LED. Remove the 2 screws holding in the end and lever it out with your thumbnail to reveal a small circuit board with IDE connector. Connect your 2.5" drive (no jumpers), slide it into the case and replace the screws. The 2 screws mentioned that come separately packed are spares in case you lose one - they really are v. small.

Connect the device to your PC using the supplied USB cable. Use the single end at the drive, and the 'main' connector from the 'double connector' end at the PC. The device is powered from the PC via the USB port. If your drive needs more power, then connect the second USB connector (it has a thinner cable, I guess without the data leads) to an adjacent USB port on the PC to obtain more power. It worked OK for me with a single connector, and I left the second one dangling.

The drive was recognised immediately under WinXP (truly plug and play - no additional drivers required) and appears on this laptop as Local Disk F: and can be accessed in the normal way. The LED is lit when connected, and flashes when there is disk activity. It appears to run completely cold, even with no fan or other ventilation.

This is a similar device to quickfind item 125132 on this site, but from the comments that (silver) model also has a mini USB connector. This one just has the full size connector.

The device works well, and I'm well pleased.

Sumvision USB2.0 2.5" Black Caddy manufacturer #: ENCL-BL-2.5USB - price 5.79 pounds.

This caddy is excellent. Does exactly what is says it does. The lead has two USB connectors at the PC end so you can connect the power first (thin cable) to spin the drive up before connecting the data cable. This gives more reliable auto-mounting in XP.
It is much much better than quickfind code: 119509 Sumvision USB 2.0 2.5" Aluminium Silver Caddy manufacturer #: ENCL-SV-2.5USB (5.99 pounds) : which is rubbish by comparison and allows the HDD to rattle about.

OMG!!!!!!

It arrived today!

Opened the small box, and there was lots of goodies inside!!

Screw driver, spare screws, the case, manual, 1 cable with 2 usb at one end and also a little black bag to put your hard drive in!

This is a very good product! This doesn't deserve to be under £7!!

Firstly it took me a while to figure out how to fit everything in, as the manual was abit too basic.

But after I unscrewed everything, I fitted it in, and partitioned everything in the drive.

Then I tested it by draging my music onto it, and damnnnnnnnn ITS FAST!!

5 STARS for sure!!

For under £7, this caddy is an absolute bargain. Fitted with an 80GB Seagate Momentus 5400.3 (ebuyer code 108782) it can be powered using a single cable and is seen by Vista as a proper hard drive, not removable storage (like an Ipod). Fast data transfer and a nice quality finish to the case. Supplied with a small pouch, spare screws and software (for Win 98 etc.). Bargain.

What can I say - it does exactly what it should and at a super price. Quality is very good, had the 2.5" drive in there and running in 5mins. The drive feels nice and secure without being too tight.

Well worth every penny

This little USB convertor and case works brilliantly.

I had a 20GB Seagate working in it within 20 seconds of opening the box.
2 screws to open it, plug the drive to the board and you are done.

The 20GB drive worked fine powered form a USB2 port on my desktop computer, but drew too much power for the USB1.1 port on my very old laptop. Unfortunately on the laptop, there is only a single usb port, so I can't try the auxilery cable option to provide extra current from a second USB port.

Then I tried a Seagate Momentus 60GB drive. (ST96812A) This is a fast laptop drive, spinning at 5400rpm. It draws too much current for a single USB 2.0 port, but works fine with 2 ports supplying power.

All in all, for the money, this is a simple solution, and may work well for you, just be aware of the power limitations on USB ports, and the number of ports you have available to you.

Works just as it should, and quick too!

I tried it first with an unformatted drive, so had to use Windows XP disk management (control panel/ administrative tools/ computer management/ disk management) to format the drive and assign it a drive letter, but once this was done all worked perfectly.

Excellent little device. Brillent way to use up any 2.5" old HDD drive you may have kicking around. Also Good for testing purposes if your laptop goes on the blink.

Truly Great.

PS. You don`t need the cd drivers if you are using XP SP1 or greater. Windows will find it straight away.
