Great budget graphics card capable of playing all modern games
review by: Andrew Orwellrating:

os: Windows Vista

I purchased this to replace a X1950Pro graphics card that was just too noisey. I fully expected to take a performance hit in games, but the 8600GT competes well when at stock speeds, but beats the X1950 when overclocked.

The card I received overclocks easily to 700 core and 1700 memory making almost as fast as a 8600GTS. It is completely silent (no fans), and the heatpipes keep it amazingly cool. I have purchased much more expensive graphics cards in the past, but this is by far the best performance/prics combo.

It plays all modern games (Oblivion, Supreme Commander, Company of Heroes) at 1280x1024 on high settings. On top of this, there are mature Vista drivers available for it, so no compatability issues.

More clearance above the Heatsink
review by: Anonymous os: Not Applicable

Bought this on 8th Dec 2007 for 67quid.

Clearance is now much less of an issue than previously reviewed.

The chunky heatsink on the back of the board now sits more horizontal (albeit still at a slight angle) so the clearance height between the the furthest bottom corner on the PCB (opposite end to DVI's) and the lowest part of the heat sink is now about 23mm, where previously it looked about 5mm (measured to the bottom of the pin that sticks out lower than the bottom of the heatsink).

The width of the heat sink is 33mm (measured from PCB to futhest edge of heatsink). This measurement should help with fitting this silent monster.

FYI, my 8600gt PCB is labelled with: V091 VER 1.1

If I compare mine to the pictures in this review, there is significant more clearance in my 8600gt (than what looks like 5mm in the review). Also the front pcb layout is significantly different too.

www.xsreviews.co.uk/reviews/graphics-cards/msi-8600gt/3

FWIW I buying a Asus P5K, although I believe itll fit a MSI Neo too.

Hope this helps someone take less of a gamble than I did!

Good Card but massive heatsink
review by: Anonymous rating:

The picture doesn't show very clearly the massive heat sink on the back of the card. On my motherboard (asus m2n32-sli deluxe) this stops the card fitting in the 1st PCIe socket as it clashes with my cpu cooler (Artic Freezer 64 Pro). It fits fine in the 2nd PCIE slot though.
After running a few hours of games the heat sink gets very hot (GPU@75*c)when overclocked about 10%.
It will happily play NFS:Carbon and BF2142 at full graphics but CNC3 and CoH only run smoothly with very low/no aa.
I think if I overclock it much more i will need to get a 80mm fan to stick on the heatsink.
Briliant bargain.

NB: IT CANNOT RUN DX10 GAMES WELL, ONLY DX9

Good Value
review by: Anonymous os: Windows XP

This card is such a bargain and runs all the modern games.

This card does not require additional power from the PSU.

Beware though as the size of the heatsink in reality
is much larger and with certain motherboards can block a memory slot.

A very happy customer

This card has exceeded my expectation. I managed to play Oblivion and Command & Conquer with all the effects on and it handles with ease. The card also achieved the current maximum Windows Vista Aero desktop store of 5.9. Ebuyer is one of the cheapest seller for this card and an addition £10 off from Google checkout make it too good a bargain to miss. I am certainly a happy customer.

Good value for money

If you're looking for the best value for your money and want to have DX10 this is the only choice you have. Oh.. and it does H.264 as well!

It is completely silent which makes it great for HTPC (coupled with Antec Fusion - barely fits into the case! heat-pipes are a bit too high) and gives you enough power to play all new games. It does OC well, which makes it to performe the same as GTS version (remember about the airflow in your case!). After OC it never gets any hotter than 65C which is great.

Sure you can buy 8800GTS 320MB but at the moment there is no DX10 games on the market and 8600GT is OK for current games. So why spend 100£ more? Just wait a while and when Crysis is out pick new DX10 card, which is going to be 50% of it's current price.

Bought 2 of these to enhance my aging dual core setup.

Athlon X2 @ 2.5Ghz
2GB RAM
2 x 8600GT

3DMark06 score of 7377 at stock speed.

http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=2873291

Previously my X1950XT scored 5694

http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=1504696

So you can get the same performance as 8800GTS but for a lot less dosh!

Oh and it's completely silent.

Highly recommended.

Vista scores:
Aero Desktop- 5.9
Gaming Performance- 5.5

Card runs hot... around 60 when playing games.. The copper heat pipes come out and can prevent the computer case from closing so modding of your computer case might be needed!

Still 5 stars for performance. Can just about run BioShock smoothly-smoothish with all settings on FULL and 1024p.

Great VFM from a great retailer

Bought this from ebuyer to replace a faulty XFX 7900GT going through RMA.

To be honest, the performance is almost on a par with the 7900GT which cost 3 times more when I bought it, so a bit of a bargain. The real bonus of this card is that it's silent. Temperatures rarely get above 60C.

BTW - ebuyer are the number 1 e-tailer in my opinion. They always deliver when they say they will. Scan on the other hand are torture - failing to deliver, and taking a month to RMA the 7900GT (and still not resolved).

I'll be sticking with ebuyer for all future purchases.
