Nuvi 250

Not ApplicableThis is my third sat-nav. Previously I had a Medion which was unreliable and a bit fiddly to use. Then a Garmin Streetpilot I3 which had basic features but was very easy to use. I loaned it to my wife, and she doesn't want to give it back...!
I believe Garmin have been making these things longer than any other manufacturer, and their products all have a quality feel.
It was cheaper to buy the Nuvi than to buy new mapping for my Streetpilot - it's even easier to use than ever, with a super interface, clear bright screen and clear voice directions. It also works with my Mapsource software so I can up and download waypoints as well as transferring them between the Nuvi and the old Streetpilot.
My only gripe is that is doesn't do 'text to speach' - so says 'turn right' but NOT 'turn right onto Blogs Street'. A small point, but a good safety feature at a busy intersection or round-a-bout which saves you having to look down
at the screen. Overall I'm very pleased with it.
Great Sat Nav

Not ApplicablePreviously i'm quite a sceptical with sat navs, but after using the Garmin Nuvi 250 for a week now and I find it a great product to use. The interface is clear and easy to use, switching menus and locating places on the sat nav is a breeze thanks to the pleasant touch screen interface.
Mapping is pretty accurate, though at one point it did get confused with a traffic light junction thinking it's a roundabout instead. But most of the time it got me to the places that was required. Battery life on the unit is another strength, lasting well over three hours. I went from Leicester to Bolton, Bolton to Birmingham and back to Leicester on battery power alone, which is fantastic. Throw in speed camera detection integrated in the unit and it's probably all you ever need as a travelling companion.
There's not a lot to fault on the Garmin Nuvi, probably the lack of AC charger to charge it at home (though you can charge it via USB with an A-B cable). Also for Windows Vista users the update facility does not work with this unit. At the moment it only works for Windows XP, which can be a gripe. All in all this is a great product and I highly recommend this model for anyone who wants a decent sat nav at an affordable price.
Narrow is good!

Not ApplicableI bought this last summer from a well known but not cheap car maintenance store as the cheaper one I'd bought from a well known e-retailer refused to take the euro maps it came with and I didn't have time to ring random countries to find out where to send it for fixing before I headed out to Europe.
Well, the garmin is a million times better.
We did Europe, around 5000 miles of it, with 2 hiccups
- In southern France we chose to avoid toll roads (France must be the most expensive in Europe) and found ourselves on a road that someone had decided was now private property.
- In Bulgaria, the Sat Nav just announced "Catch Ferry" like catching a ferry in Bulgarian is an every day occurence!
Neither of these was the fault of the Sat Nav. It was like another friend going around Europe, small enough to take out of the car for all the small stops and totally getting everything right.
This is a landmark product in terms of convenience and functionality.
One more thing - it conditions you to touch screens so makes you look a plonker at cashpoints for a while.

Windows XPErgonomic, usable, useful, accurate, slim, quick, bright, clever, really quite good. I'm well impressed, one of those buys when you think "why didn't I buy this months ago?"

Not ApplicableUK AND EUROPE for under a hundred pounds this is a GREAT little unit - I had previously had the Myguide 3100 actually I had two of them but sent them both back since the battery only lasted about an hour
I have been running this Garmin now for 4 hours and my battery is just at half full Amazing.
The unit is very small and compact and has all the features you would expect.
BUY IT.
Nuvi 250 - Great!

Not ApplicableLong term user of Tom Tom upon PDA but needed full European mapping so bought this. Slightly different user interface to TomTom - no better or worst - just different.
Drove half way down France with unit, perfect Nav.
Put unit into walking mode and find nearest resteraunt and it guided us to the loacal eating district - good battery life.
Took SD card out of camera and used Nuvi to view whilst on holiday.
Perfect tool - I recomend
Garmin Nuvi 250 review

Windows XPThis is my first Sat Nav system and I’ve only previously used a Tom Tom One V2. You can use the Garmin straight out of the box, just charge it up and away you go. The instructions are fairly limited (nothing to expand this on Garmin’s website), but as a basic system it didn’t take too long to work out how to use it. The 250 feels solid and well made and due to the thickness being about the same as a pack of cards it will easily fit in a jacket pocket. I bought the 300 series leather case to carry it round in and this fits a treat. The windscreen mount holds the unit very securely and it is easy to remove from the mount. The only downside with the ergonomics is that the in car lead is a bit tricky to plug in to the port on the back of the unit when it’s in the mount. Despite this the unit will go for hours without being attached to an external power supply (I’ve managed 4 hours so far). The mapping is clear and the display is easy on the eye, with a softer night-time mode for when driving in darkness. The voices are a bit limited, and rather robotic, but the instructions are easy to follow. The directions have been virtually faultless so far, and I’ve only found one missing road after 400 miles of use, so the mapping seems up to date. The routing is pretty good, but sometimes takes you on the odd side road, although always getting you right to the door if you use the postcode to plan your route. The speed camera data is fairly up to date, and a must have if this is to compete with other models. I haven’t tested the Euro mapping yet, but will be doing that soon. So how does it compare with the Tom Tom? The Tom Tom has more features and is a good system, but I found the spoken directions slightly annoying at times. In the end it's down to personal preference - I just preferred the Garmin. All in all I’d recommend this sat nav system.
