Better by a long way than the SATA version
os:
Windows XPAfter reading the reviews of this drive for the SATA version saying it was noisy, ran hot and was generally not what was expected from the 'silent' drives of old barracudas - I decided to try the IDE version. Now, I have got a SATA 500gb barracuda sitting in my main pc, tried this IDE version in the spare pc.
Boy is it quiet! Much more like my previous 80gb and 300gb drives from seagate. Whisper quiet write, access, even when writing a few things at a time.
Now if only my main pc could have a drive as quiet as this... If you have the option, plonk for the IDE version. It may be slower (just), but the (lack of) noise makes it worth it.
Great Drive
os:
Windows XPGot mine over a week ago and the price has droped by 17.00! Good drive its silent(well i can't hear it over the PSU fans) Drive formats to 465.76 GB in NTFS that works out at 13.9 pence per GB! not bad. will buy one more and make raid. should speed up those data transfers. Only using this drive for data keep Windows on it's own drive.
Sky+

Not ApplicableWorks well in Sky+ boxes as a disk upgrade too... Very quiet.
500Gb in my Sky+ Box!
os:
OtherGreat drive to use in your Sky+ Satellite Box!
Just as quite as the original 160GB (80GB recordable) Seagate CE (Consumer Electronic) drive.
After recording quite a few programs on my (160GB) 80GB original drive I only had 41% disk space left. After the upgrade and after copying over all my recorded programs I now have 91% available and a full length feture film only takes up 1%!
No pauses or delays in playback or recoding. Great value, great product, fast free delivery too! well done ebuyer.
Pretty good

Windows XPAm not much of a technician but found it pretty easy to get this up and running. Drive arrived boxed in protective bubble and wrapped in anti static cover. Item looks and feels like quality item, pretty chunky in weight. Hooked this up as primary slave drive in ageing dell dimension, and booted up xp. Recognised drive as new hardware, and then nothing. After web search realised I had to right click my computer - manage - disk management, and format drive. Then I was away. Think the drive is pretty quiet, but its quite hard to tell over the racket the ageing power supply fan makes in my desktop!
Quiet drive fitted to an old Flat panel iMac
os:
Max OSXMany people bemoan the fact that Macs are quite difficult to upgrade, especially the older flat panel iMacs that came with only 80Gb. Check this website out and see what other Mac owners have upgraded their iMac HDs with http://forums.xlr8yourmac.com/drivedb/search.drivedb.lasso
I have installed this drive to a 17" Flat Panel iMac that originally had a 80Gb hard drive. The reason for choosing Seagate is mostly because Apple have it as their HD supplier and over the years I have upgraded many Apples with Seagate drives and have not had one fail yet. I can thoroughly recommend this drive for being quiet. You can occasionally hear the drive spin up after it has been spun down by the OS. Other than that its the fan noise you hear. A search on the net will reveal all sorts of info on how to take the 17" Flat panel "angle poise" Mac apart to withdraw the hard drive and optical drive assembly. Both can be upgraded along with the RAM (officially only 512Mb but will take 1Gb to give 2Gb in total) and the internal clock battery (recommended as you already have the cover off). The RAM upgrade also came from eBuyer QuickFind 38992. Don't forget to get some thermal paste as well.
Good Quality Drive
os:
Windows XPOrdered on Sunday night with a five day delivery selected and it came of Wednesday. Took it out of it's bubble-wrap and static-bag to find a new HDD. So far, so good. Popped it in and installed windows without a hitch (apart from my forgetting to change the jumpers :p).
It's also quiter than any of my previous hard-drives and has brought my system temp right down.
I also suggest buying an 80 pin IDE Cable (88072). If a lot tidyer than the old ribbons.
There is a slight problem with the drives cover however. If you're HDD bays are separated with small hooks, the cover tends to get caught slightly. Not a major problem though.
Overall i'd give this drive a 9.5/10 and recommend it as a good buy.
Good HDD for Sky+
Bought this drive for upgrading my Sky+ box (a v3 Thompson). Works like a charm. Used the brilliant and free Copy+ (www.skycopyplus.co.uk) to transfer my saved recordings over and setup the drive. Anyone comfortable working with the insides of a PC should have no problem with this job.
Humax 9200T
os:
OtherOn the back of the previous review I have bought this drive for my Humax box and also found it easy to install and format. Brings my box back to life and now I am happy
Ive popped it into a Humax!
os:
Not ApplicableFirst, delivery: I bought the drive with a few other items, these all arrived loose in a slightly damaged box which included a string or two of those large plastic bags of air. No particular organisation in this - the air bags simply fill the unused space in the box and stops things rattling around or the box being crushed too much. This drive was wrapped in plain old (may be conductive) bubble wrap. I was disappointed by this lack of significant protection in transit. Compare this with other drives I have bought previously with other items from ebuyer. Previous (mainly Maxtor) drives were delivered in a plain cardboard box packaged with about 1 inch thick foam protection all round. This is the only reason I give 4 out of 5 stars.
I've been running low on space in my Humax PVR-9200T (personal video recorder) for quite a while and took the plunge to swap the 160GB drive fitted inside by the manufacturer for one of these Seagate ST3500630A 500GB drives. I wasn't sure the Humax would cope with such a large capacity, the largest I could find for sale at ebuyer, but I thought I could use it in my PC if I had problems (note my old-ish PC, like the Humax uses PATA drives, not SATA drives)...
But no problem at all. 5 screws to take the lid off, 4 screws to remove the drive mounting plate, and a further 4 to remove the drive from the mounting plate, all easily accessible. Power connector & data connector were a bit stiff, but unplugged with care. The new drive was mechanically identical (screw holes & dimensions) as I expected - and probably true of all 3.5 inch PATA drives, true of all I've seen anyway. I plugged the mains back in and the disc was formatted imediately after I entered the password (default = 0,0,0,0). It has given no trouble for several days now and has 500GB capacity of course. And more noise comes from the Humax fan than the new drive.
Note that doing this swap may have invalidated my guarantee, but I doubt that anyone could tell if I swapped the drives back. Also, for safety, be sure to unplug mains power and wait a short while before opening the lid.
