xp-64
review by: Anonymous os: Windows XP

In my opinion this is the fastest and most stable version of windows xp released, the big problem with it is a lack of driver support for multimedia devices, modern motherboards, cpus, gfx and sound cards tend to be supported, but tv capture cards, printers and scanners seem to have been ignored.

Whoever said this doesnt work on intel 64-bit was only partially correct, this runs great on intel core2 and Pentium 4 dual core cpus, basically anthing that supports the 64bit x86 instruction set, also known as x64 and AMD64, what it doesnt run on are the intel itanium cpus, which never took off in the desktop market space.

It can run some 98% of 32bit software, and i personally havent found anything that wouldnt run, however it will also run the 64bit versions of many applications and games, giving some additional performance from the extra registers inside a 64bit cpu that arent enabled during 32bit operation, as well as support for lots of ram

This operating system flies, 64bit is definitely the future. The only problem is that x64 (Vista or XP) is not compatible with 16bit software, or any programs with this old code embedded.

I have not found a game that doesn't work yet, but if you use Zonealarm you will have to change to Comodo. Pinnacle video editing software doesn't work either. Everything else I've tried works fine.

This operating will come into its own when more dedicated 64bit software is written.

The best OS

This is the best OS I've used. It is very stable and runs great. The only problem is driver support is slightly less for x64, but this is not a huge problem compared to how much better the system performs. I used this for a self build system and I couldn't be more pleased. Vista has to many problems at the moment and I wanted x64 to run 4gb of ram effectively so I went with this and I am glad I did. An over all excellent product.

Netgear Problems

XP64 is good BUT when I tried to link it into my wireless network, the problems started.

I could not get the Netgear WG111T USB Adapter (dongle) to work and the reason is that Netgear HAVE NOT and WILL NOT provide 64-bit drivers for their products! Isn't that helpful? To get round the problem, I had to move the modem/router to the XP64 machine, because that talks via the LAN (in infrastructure mode), so no 64-bit code required. Bit of a pain because it meant swapping hard drives between machines.

I will still give XP64 5 stars and go off an give netgear none for being so unsupportive to what must be a huge customer base.

Best OS available

This OS is the best money can buy. I 'upgraded' to Vista, gave it a month and went looking for an OS to replace it, so I gave the 120 day trial of x64 a go and I've just ordered the full thing now.

It's as stable as XP and faster than XP and miles faster than Vista. It also allows you to use more than 3gb of RAM.

The only downside I've found is that it doesn't allow you to hibernate with a combined total memory (RAM and video memory) of 4gb or more. There are workarounds but no real solution.

Get it while you still can! XP will not be available to buy after the end of Jan.

Very good OS, one thing you need to be aware of before ordering is that you will need 64 bit drivers for your SATA controllers (if you don't have them) otherwise the OS will not see any HDDs to install to.

Support & drivers are available off the intel website, for intel based systems.

this is a really good OS. having run it for a year i'm not sure if it has ever crashed. i have had no problems with software, as windows cleverly emulates itself for 32bit applications.

i have had an issue in getting a WLAN network PCI card, as linksys etc. say, "we will never support x64 systems". this remains unresolved and i am using a USB one. this small problem is, in my mind, insignificant.

good OS. very good, in fact.
