Quality!
os:
Windows VistaOK i`ve only had this for 48 hours but here goes,
the build quality is superb, heavy duty alloy casing, good quality cabling, very nicely finished.
the web based interface is a doddle to use, just like netgears routers but a lot more straight forward.
access times are surprisingly good(better over cat5 a little slower over wireless).
both xp(x3) & vista(x1) machines access this device with no problems at all.(to the reviewer with problems using vista: i`m using a dell inspiron 1525 wireless Vista home basic & it works perfectly, perhaps the problem lies eslewhere?
all in all a first class product that has taken the strain off 4 machines
Great bit of kit
os:
Windows VistaOut of the box and up and running in 15 minutes without any problem. Software that came bundled was excellent, especially the drive mapping software, mapping can be a pain if you are not used to it this was really easy to set up.
Doesn't work with Vista, works great with Ubuntu

LinuxThis works very well with my Ubuntu machines. Unfortunately, I have one Vista laptop and this NAS does not work with Vista.
That's not made clear, from what I can see, on the product pages here on eBuyer or elsewhere. Vista's NTLM 2 authentication is not supported by the NAS.
Other than that, it's pretty good. The casing gets a touch warm but really nothing to worry about.
Naturally, it goes idle when not in use. It can take a frustratingly long while to get started up again, though.
Overall, I'm happy, though.
Cheap Network Storage - may not support Vista.
os:
Windows VistaI've had it a week,
1. The drive is formatted in FAT32, and controlled by firmware. So when you are running over the network, the backups are relatively slow, and I haven't been able to backup my Vista system using the Backup software in Vista. XP and 2000 works fine.. Any file over 4GB gets invisibly split into 4GB lumps by the firmware so it all works OK.
2. If you reformat it in NTFS, I suspect that you can only use it through the USB interface.
3. For the price it's OK, at least you can schedule regular backups of various PC's around the house onto a single drive, if speed is not all important. If speed is important, use a USB-2 device, it'll be cheaper.
4. Fairly simple to set up and use.. but don't connect it straight into the network, put it on the back of a PC first using a network cable so that you can configure it. Otherwise you will see NOTHING.
Print Manager
Does anyone know if this NAS can act as a print manager for a usb printer so that I can share it across my network? I currently have to run the printer as a share locally, but this obviously means the PC needs to be left on all the time.
Correction to comment in review
I'm looking for another NAS and spotted an error in this review that might put people off this device.
The statement "this NAS does not work with Vista" and the comment about NTLM 2 are confusing.
NTLM v2 is Vista's DEFAULT protocol. Bizarrely, it tries to negotiate using NTLM v2 and if it fails it gives up. In Vista Ultimate you can change this and tell it to try NTLM v2 then NTLM v1 by using the secpol.msc command. In Vista Premium you have to change a registry setting (not difficult).
So, the fact that the NAS drive does not support NTLM v2 does NOT stop it working with Vista.
I found this all out when my MediaCenter Vista PC could not 'see' my Linkstation on my network.
A quick search in Google is all it takes for more info.
The Freecom drives USED (2 years ago) to use a proprietory protocol, not TCP/IP. Worth double-checking that this one doesn't.
I hope that helps.
