Great quality product
os:
Windows XPComes with everything you need:
the drive
2 pin power plug (presumably for europe/usa)
3 pin british plug
power adaptor
short patch lead (network cable)
usb a to b lead (printer type)
quick start guide
cd (software should not be needed... i didnt need it :) )
Comes out of the box formatted as one big 500GB FAT32 partition (which limits you to having no single file greater than 4gig) i formatted it to NTFS after connecting it to USB, only to find that when plugged into a router via LAN cable, the software in the freecom unit could not understand NTFS :(
So I used windows disk management and GPartEd (in Ubuntu Linux) to make a 450GB FAT32 partition and a 50GB NTFS partition... the software in the unit simply sees it as a 450gb drive that can be shared over the network/internet and the NTFS partition can be used via USB if i need it
Sorry if this was a little unclear or difficult to understand.. but if you've worked with hard drives before you'll know :) (by the way I have not yet looked for a firmware upgrade for this)
Im still giving it 5 stars because its a great product.. amazing quality, comes with everything to get you started, and filling it will be a challenge.. he says as he loads up bitTorrent ;)
Highly recommended *thumbs up*
Great NAS Drive
os:
LinuxDoes what is says on the tin.
Easy to use.
Works under Linux as a samba share.
Fantastic!
os:
Windows VistaThis is a great bit of kit. The only problem I had was getting it to work with my router, but after I disabled DHCP on the NAS drive everything worked perfectly.
The usable capacity is about 465Gb, and the bundled backup software is surprisingly good. I've scheduled a backup of all my data at 6pm daily, and the software is clever enough only to copy over new or changed files.
The unit is very quiet and there is no fan. It looks very slick, and the blue status indicators on the front are a nice touch.
We have two PCs in the office running Vista 64bit, and both were able to connect to the NAS drive first time once I'd got it talking to the router.
Aluminium with fanless design
os:
Windows XPIn answer to the comment about whether this has a fan or not- the product has no fan and the heat is dissipated through the aluminium enclosure. This means that the drive is very quiet but the enclosure does get quite hot, however it gets nowhere near the max operating temperature of the unit. All in all this is a very good, well designed product and is the cheapest way of adding extra storage to any network. An equivalent 500gb NAS tape unit would cost a grand!
Very pleased
os:
Windows VistaThis is a really well built, and designed device. Solid sturdy aluminium casing acts as a heat sink as the unit is fanless. It does get warm, but not dangerously so. I was very keen to find a solution that wasn't noisy and this is nearly silent.
Set up as very easy. I plugged the drive into my home network, went to 'Network' on the Vista start menu, and it was found as a computer called "FND" (Freecom Network Drive I assume). The supplied configuration software could not find the device, which is probably a Vista issue. Browsing to "http://FND" opens the web based configuration for the device.
Someone in a previous review mentioned that this acts as a DHCP server, causing conflicts with their router. DHCP was off by default on my unit, so this wasn't the case.
SMB and FTP are offered as the two ways to talk to the device over the network. Having an always on FTP server is handy.
I haven't done a 'proper' speed test on it but got around ~5MB/sec (not Mb) copying lots of photos, which is fine.
Does what is says and is very well made. A great buy.
FANTASTIC DRIVE and FANTASTIC SERVICE
os:
Windows XPThis is the first time I've ever bothered to write a review but this little drive justifies the effort. The drive is incredibly quiet and was so simple to set up with the supplied cd. After configuring security on my router, I was up and running within an hour accessing files remotely. The internal drive in mine is the SAMSUNG HD501LJ S0MUJ1EP903619 CR100-11...currently selling for around 60 pounds from ebuyer product code 130454. I will be ordering a couple of these to upgrade storage in a couple of PCs If you are considering a backup/storage drive this offers great value for money. Another Great service from Ebuyer as it was delivered cheaply and early
Quality Samsung hard drive
os:
Windows XPAs another reviewer has reported, this unit comes with a Samsung hard drive, renowned for their quietness and quality. Furthermore, although the Freecom unit comes with a 2-year guarantee, Samsung hard drives are guaranteed for 3 years, so if the unit fails (which is likely to be the hard drive itself) you effectively have a 3-year guarantee.
My only quibble would be that the Quick Start Guide is too brief. A detailed guide is provided on CD, but a more intelligible printed quick start guide would be helpful.
does what it says on the packet...

Windows VistaBought this on the basis of the reviews and I haven't been disappointed. Ordered on super saver delivery and received it in 48 hours! Took the advice of other reviewers and setup via usb first , ran the setup disks and then moved it to my router (orange livebox). Plugged in and ran the mapping software on my pc next door and hey presto it worked first time.
The hard disk is whisper quiet accept when you stick it on top of a filling cabinet - the vibrations make a low humming but easily solved by a mouse mat placed underneath. The disk gets pretty warm so be careful if your placing it near other electrical devices.
Performance wise I bought it to stream my tv programmes via the ethernet port on my router to my kids laptops around the house and so far it's done a decent job with very little delay in or pauses in the programmes - compared to my previous solution a separate hard disk on an another wireless machine in the house. Something else to mention is the item has 465gb free to use - don't expect exactly 500gb.
Superb
os:
Windows XPAgree this is a very good network drive. Anybody trying to get an external drive should buy this. Doubles as a USB ext drive and a net work drive. Network drive is accessible from any computers so great if you have too many computers and users in the house, so that some fights on needing to use the same computer can be avoided. Easy to cofigure.
Great for PVR

Not ApplicableI got this as an add on for my satellite receiver. Works a treat, so quiet and low power consumption. Decided against one that is powered by the USB as I believe this overloads the circuit board over long periods. Price is best Ive seen.
