i first of all have to admit i went for this HDD for the look. it's got this side trim light up in sort of amber colour, like the neon lighting under a modified GTR, it's so cool....the first impression is the attractive design of the casing, and black colour is so different from all other silver machine. alright the plastic casing doesn't help cooling, but the hard drive doesn't get too warm in any kind of condition, certainly no warmer than the matelic lacie porsche 250GB i used to have.

The hard drive will stop spinning if not used for a while, this kind of function will not only prolong it's life, but also reduce the use of electricity.....right??

when compare with lacie this hard drive is rapid, quieter, more attractive and take up less space of my desk, when you consider it comes with a 5 year warranty, it's got to be high on your short list. excellent all in all.

I have a number of external USB disks I've created by purchasing hard disks and separate emclosures and assembling them, but after buying this, I won't bother again. Compared with my ones, this is faster, much much quiter (basically I can't hear it unless it is active), runs cooler, and looks the business. And the transformer is smaller and runs cooler too. And it switches itself off....

The fact it doesn't have an on/off switch is also an advantage - you remember to stop the device before unplugging it!

The only reason I might consider something different is if I wanted to stack them.

I have not bothered with the backup software that came with the drive, I just moved the software so it didn't autorun, and I use the disk as a backup/copy device using Explorer.

All in all, recommended. I'm not surprised it is out of stock.

Can't knock this hard drive in any shape or form, makes little or no sound in use and looks good ta boot. OK its not really a 500G more like 465G but i don't think i'll miss 35G.

Well worth a buy.

I bought this simply as I needed more space for content, this being the first external hard drive I've bought. It looks great, like other reviewers have said the orange glowing light at the front looks fantastic although it can be a bit bright if you are trying to sleep in the same room as it!

Speed at accessing data is great, I've even been able to play games (Orange Box, World in Conflict, Call of Duty 4 etc) off it without any problem at all; they actually run better than on my lower RPM laptop hard drive!

The only negative is that for some reason if I leave it plugged in on start up then Vista will not boot, I'm pretty sure this is due to my configuration however and will probably not be a problem for most people.

Just to say segate have done it again along with ebuyer exellant product at good price very fast silent running a funky flashing yellow led light while working very smart. many thank's keep up the good work :-)

The hard drive came nice and quick (it doesn't take weeks)The outside plastic is thin but that doesn't matter because there is quite a think layer of bubble wrap so that it won't get damaged. I would go for the free delivery (that is normally the best i think)

Buy it

well worth ,(sorry for my english ,im not good at it) :D ,about the seagate ,very fancy with dhe light at side ,fits averywhere, good look at desktop ,silent at work ,it has a autoshutdown when you stop working at it so elongate his life and electricity too, i'm curious why they don't put a shutdown switch at back for examble, it switch on and turn off when the computer run or turn off, this is the only fault ,it comes with 5 year of waranty ,nice :D .At all, its a good product ,good work.

500gb storage for just under 65 quid (at time of writing), bargain! drive is trouble free and works straight out of the box. pre-formatted to NTFS though, so if u plan to use for both pc/mac u need to reformat to fat32.

best thing about the drive, its whisper quiet and i can hardly hear it. superb quality from seagate as you would expect.

the reason i chose this one over the others, 1) 5 yr warrenty and 2) its a seagate.
